Very entertaining. Not a litrpg but is that a bad thing?
Revisado: 11-05-23
One of the most entertaining series of books I’ve read since I ran out of good stuff and went down the litrpg rabbit hole to fill time. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a good book with a unique premise. I wouldn’t say that the author doesn’t have room to grow in their craft but it’s not poorly written either. They also seem to be getting better and I look forward to seeing what they do in the future. The narrator does a good job with the male voices but the female voices are hit and miss. Overall I really like the series and eagerly anticipate the next book.

Historia
Exile to the miserable world of Sedh, the disgraced Necron Lord Oltyx is consumed with bitterness. Once heir to the throne of a dynasty, he now commands nothing but a dwindling garrison of warriors, in a never-ending struggle against Ork invaders. Oltyx can think of nothing but the prospect of vengeance against his betrayers, and the reclamation of his birthright. But the Orks are merely the harbingers of a truly unstoppable force. Unless Oltyx acts to save his dynasty, revenge will win him only ashes.

I've never been a fan of the 40k books I've read. but this and the infinite and the divine were much better than the other ponderous books I've tried to read from the 40k setting.

Best book in this series so far
Revisado: 08-07-21
Erin is still the weakest character by a large margin but at least she didn't return to acting like a complete psychopath. With that unfortunate exception the rest of the characters were done well. Author kept focus on a single character for a decent amount of time before moving on and the story feels more cohesive for it. Needs to be more action. There wasn't a lot going on in this one. It's not flawless, but it's a marked improvement in almost every way from earlier entries.

The ruling families of Germany and Austria-Hungary, those with the chill of magic in their blood, will stop at nothing in their quest for power, and they’ve drawn the entire world into a bloody war because of it. But Florence Cavell - code name Geist - means to stop them. She had to defy her family, cut her hair, and disguise herself as a man to join the legendary Ethereal Squadron.

Audio quality was terrible
Revisado: 07-11-21
This sounds like it was recorded on a cheap headset in someone's bathroom. Never had to put a book down because of sound quality before but I couldn't make it past the first ten minutes or so. Couldn't say if the story was good or bad.

Historia
The city of Celum is not much like Liscor at all. While Erin is surrounded by familiar, human faces, she’s far from home and without her inn. At the same time, a certain ill-tempered Lyonette is squatting in Erin’s inn, and Goblins are on the move. The Goblin Lord’s threat reaches across the entire region, and the Redfang tribe has rallied against him with the Floodplains tribe, although their Chieftains do not agree on some crucial matters. This winter, there is only snow, Goblins, magic, and iambic pentameter.

Book is great. Erin is terrible.
Revisado: 05-09-21
This is by far the best entry so far in this series. The mechanical issues from book one and the first half of book two are gone. Miss "practically perfect in every way other than the sociopathy"( Rioka)seems to be entering a credible character arc in which she isn't unnecessarily nasty to everyone and is running into obstacles she can't just Mary Sue away. New characters that have been introduced are much more fleshed out than the original crop.
Story jumps around a bit but not so much that I can't tolerate it and the detours are largely introducing and expanding on those interesting characters I mentioned earlier.
I had only one major problem. Erin is a objectively terrible person in this book. To the point that I don't know if the author can salvage her character. My disgust was so deep it was physical. She has always been a manic pixie dream girl trope. Which is to say a shallow sack of assorted quirks. But this time around she adds thoughtlessness, narcissism, and selfishness. I could deal if these actions were presented as a character flaw she got called on. But everyone just rolls with it. Don't want to spoil anything, but if you're reading this do yourself a favor and skip chapter 18 and the first half of 19.Thankfully she is largely absent from about three quarters of the book.

Historia
Before the being called the Emperor revealed himself, before the rise of the aeldari, before the necrontyr traded their flesh for immortal metal, the world was born in violence. Even when they inhabited bodies of flesh, Trazyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner were polar opposites. Trazyn, a collector of historical oddities, presides over a gallery full of the most dangerous artefacts - and people - of the galactic past. Orikan, a chronomancer without peer, draws zodiacs that predict and manipulate the future.

Best 40k novel I've read
Revisado: 11-11-20
40K novels are, as a rule, terrible. glad this one breaks that rule. Orikan and Trazen are very well written characters, the pacing is good, it really does a good job building out the necron culture. The narrator was also quite good. Overall I'm impressed, to the point where I think I would have enjoyed this even if I didn't know anything about the 40k setting.

Better than the last one. Still not great.
Revisado: 07-28-20
I had my issues with the last book. chief among them how bad it was from a technical standpoint. jumping from one character to another without warning was probably the worst example. This one started off the same and improved as it went along. The characters got somewhat better as well. The two primary protagonists weren't nearly as annoying as they were in the first one. I still like the supporting cast more than them though, and I hate that whenever the get into big trouble they just ask for help and everyone bends over backwards to solve all their problems. As little as I liked the political stuff in the first one this one got worse in that respect. A whole chapter given over to Trump winning the election was just pure cringe. If you can't listen to somebody hamfistedly inserting their hard left ideology into their book a few times in the first half of the book I would stay away. Trump and blatant political gack aside I think the authors political opinions leak into her storytelling in one specific and unfortunate way. I think it interferes with their ability to write male characters. almost every one of them is written like a living breathing stereotype. Between the cads, grandiose narcissists, harmless but somehow attractive wimps and unpredictable sociopaths I'm convinced the author has never met an actual male.
I guess the question is why you would give this, or any future titles, a listen. I would say, for me, that it's coming down to improvement. from the last book and even the beginning of this one the author is improving. Not as fast as I may like but it's interesting to see. And I have the time to burn honestly.

Historia
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Revisado: 07-12-18
Not bad. Characters are interesting and the premise is pretty good. Paceing was a little on the slow side but not unbearably so. There was a bit of a exposition dump but it wasn't some multi chapter slog that made me want to track down the author and make them pay. Overall this feels like a good beginning. I'll probably get the next one

In a world full of super powers, Felix has a pretty crappy one. He has the ability to modify any item he owns. To upgrade anything. Sounds great on paper. Almost like a video game. Except that the amount of power it takes to actually change, modify, or upgrade anything worthwhile is beyond his abilities. With that in mind, Felix settled into a normal life. A normal job. His entire world changes when the city he lives in is taken over by a super villain. Becoming a country of one city. A city state.

Revisado: 07-08-17
I was looking at the reviews for this and really didn't think I would like it. Yeah it had a decent rateing but everyone was saying it was a bunch of wish fufillment harem sillyness. I thought I had run into some big new YA novel popular with younger folks or possibly that someone had paid for some good reviews. But I was in a hurry to get something before I had to hit the road and figured why not.
Really glad I did. It is a bunch of wish fufillment harem sillyness but is also well written. The characters are fun and grow well with the story. Paceing is spot on. I expected a lot of cringeworthy writing that never materierized.
it's not perfect. the points stuff is annoying and probably works better in the written form. And there are some issues with nonsensical plot points and characters occasionally behaving out of character. But overall it was a very pleasant surprise.
