Narration ruined it (for me)

Between the narration and the writing, this book lost my attention frequently. I hung with it a lot longer than I normally would have because I didn’t have a good replacement at the moment. I gave up 3/4 of the way through.

The narration, it’s like listening to a B movie script being played. The performances are handled by more than one person. Their lines sound rushed, often abruptly switching between the characters. If you were walking down the street and overhead a casual conversation like the book sounded, it would catch your attention because it sounded so unnatural.

Story line for the book was okay. Not intricate or smooth enough to pull me in to caring about the chara though. The story needs a lot more polish.

Try listening, just couldn’t get into the story.

I was really surprised that I didn’t enjoy this book. I thought it must be me and that I had trouble paying attention with all the craziness in my life right now. I put it down to pick up later later and try again.

I try a month later and then again when things slowed down. Keep finding my attention wandering all throughout the book. This time I at least made it all the way through.

I couldn’t find reasons to attach to the characters or super curious about their personal journeys. Maybe on the next one.

I love this series but had a hard time tracking the pace on this book. I had to rewind a few times to catch the conversations. The story didn’t progress much, which made it seem like the whole book was a filler piece. Not much meat to it.

Gratifying candy

More than 10 books in the series? I quit counting at some point as it has been incorporated into my regular life. Like checking in on a best friend to see how their doing periodically. Kind of like a good night having a few beers talking about some awesome stories.

Love the characters and challenging complications that pop up for Stone’s nucleus of family and associates. Utterly happy that he is still surviving after all he’s been through.

Will Watt - is the absolute embodiment of what I’ve imagined Alastair to sound like. He somehow breathes nuance and emotion into the writing he’s given and helps make it come alive.

I dare you to see if you can stop reading this series once you start. For those that go - enjoy the ride!

Not going in my repeat pile

Very light on the story line w/ shallow characters. Then again it’s a very short book. Seems more of a focus to get a quick romp into the book and everything seems rushed.

Not the same appeal as the Nightside

I could not stay focused on the book. The pace of the story & the narration were slow to me. Bumping the speed up to 1.25 speed helped.

I was t able to build a lot of interest in the main character. Maybe he’s too methodical and too untrusting? Overall the story felt too dark and depressing for me, but dark is in the title.

As much as I like the nightside series, I wouldn’t follow this if it becomes a series. There were some horror aspects In the night side series, they were pieces that I didn’t care for. There’s more of that kind of stuff in this book, making it even less appealing to me.

Yummy and enthralling

Another stunningly great story from Ms. Hunter. Lots of action, loads of suspense and appealing characters make for a non stop read.

I downloaded my audiobook just this morning and haven’t been able to stop. I finished this evening and I’m already going back in for a re-read.

I love the integration of this world with both Jane Yellowrock and Nell Ingram in the mix. I can’t wait to what’s next for the Psy-led team in the next cut.
