Historia
For Alastair Stone, problems rarely come one at a time. He’s busy helping an old friend with a case of blackmail, when he’s contacted about a mysterious wave of minor crimes in the Oakland area - one that might involve magic. He asks Verity to look into it. When tragedy strikes, and the petty crime spree leads to a friend's disastrous near-death, Stone hurries home to investigate the situation himself. What he finds suggests terrifying new connections to a problem he thought he’d already dealt with.

She just never lets you down.
Revisado: 03-05-25
This world is getting so rich and wide, the major rivers of the world are jealous. I love how every edition pushes the edges of the world out just a little further AND a little deeper. The characters all grow and learn and screw up and learn from that too. The magic system is so well conceived, and the little idiosyncrasies of the characters are making this series a comfort read for me now. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who loves and longs for long, intricate urban fantasy series.

Historia
Alastair Stone needs a break. He’d gladly trade a big chunk of his newly-acquired fortune for a few uninterrupted weeks of rest, but that’s not going to happen. On top of dealing with his new magical status and a relationship heading in unexpected directions, he soon learns the bombshell revelations about his family aren’t even close to over yet. As if all that weren’t enough, an ancient and malevolent set of magical game pieces has resurfaced, leaving a trail of murder and mayhem in its wake.

This is one of those series you both can't wait to dive into while being nervous because how could it possible keep getting better. AND THEN IT DOES. Expert writing, engrossing plot.

Historia
Grier Woolworth spends her nights weaving spooky tales of lost souls and tragedies for tourists on the streets of downtown Savannah. Hoop skirt and parasol aside, it's not a bad gig. The pay is crap, but the tips keep the lights on in her personal haunted mansion and her pantry stocked with ramen. Life is about as normal as it gets for an ex-necromancer hiding among humans - until the society that excommunicated Grier offers her a second chance at being more than ordinary. Too bad no one warned her the trouble with being extraordinary is it can get you killed.

Great world building, weak story, TERRIBLE vocal
Revisado: 05-29-21
It's not that the narrator chosen for this book has a bad voice, it was just a bad selection for this material. It GRATED on my earbuds. The world building was great. Such a untapped area of paranormal and supernatural that it really gave the writer and opportunity to set her own stage without too many preconceived notions. Unfortunately, the story itself fell flat, and occasional odd phrasing or conflicting information (i.e. at one point it's said her kidnapping was probably just an act of opportunity and within a few sentences that flips to "oh, he must have gone through a lot of planning to pull it off.") There was just a whole lot of decisions that didn't make sense, i.e. why the heroine would risk going to a job she doesn't need and doesn't seem to like right after being liberated from her captors and knowing they're still out there.
The concept of a magical house as a backdrop was also enticing. She was a great character. I also appreciated the the lower caste of necromancers had actual real world jobs (as did the heroine, but hers for other reasons.) I appreciated that there were strands of real-world problems, not all derived from magic, that needed to be dealt with.
All in all, not sorry I read it, but weak story line, my indifference towards the characters, and such unappealing voice work means I won't be reading further in this series, but I think this might just be a me thing. Please don't read this as reasons for you not to read the book; it's just the reasons I won't be reading any more.

Historia
It's been less than a month since Alastair Stone, Jason Thayer, and Jason's sister Verity discovered a monstrous conspiracy to take over our world one mind at a time. The battle in San Francisco struck a major blow - but it didn't eliminate the threat. Not even close.

I liked with the new character that you couldn’t tell if he was good or bad all the way to the end.

Historia
It's hard enough for Alastair Stone to keep his two lives - powerful mage and mundane Occult Studies professor - separate without an old friend asking him to take on a new apprentice. Especially after a university colleague wants him to investigate a massive old house for things that go bump in the night. Still, Stone figures it's an easy job: just turn up, put on a little show, and announce that the house is clean. Only it isn't. A malevolent spirit is reawakening in the basement.

EXCELLENT WORLD BUILDING
Revisado: 06-29-19
Great read, believable protag who is flawed and relatable while having supernatural powers. Didn't see the twist at the end coming, really kept me guessing. AUDIOBOOK: Excellent performance and top-notch production.
