..especially the old man

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-16-07

This was one of those books you eagerly anticipate listening to, so you can see what happens next. While the book was wonderful, I loved the narration by the old man. He so sincerely described the aches, cares, regrets and joys of his life, doing it so vividly that I felt what that man must have felt... now THAT'S a good book.

Just what I was looking for

I'm preparing for a trip to France. I took 3 yrs French in high school & 2 yrs in college over 30 years ago. I had very little conversation in school but I wanted to be able to speak to the locals while I traveled.
I got Pimsleur Quick & Simple French, which was good, especially the pronunciation, but it wasn't advanced enough for me. Then I got Immersion Plus:French but that was too advanced. (It's basically French conversations done at a fast & a slow speed, but no translations into English!) Then I found this audiobook. You're given a sentence in English, and there's a pause while you translate into French, then they give the French translation. Chapters are organized by subject or by certain aspect of grammar, a verb tense, for example, or "driving in your car". I find old vocabulary popping into my head as I work through this download. I'll probably review this audiobook again, then go on to the next tape. It's very good for a brush-up!

Enjoyable collection of stories

TC Boyle is an amazing wordsmith, and I've always found his short stories to be full of vivid description, and if the point and plot are not always clear, the journey to the story's end is always enjoyable. This audiobook is read by the author, whose tone matches very well the world-weary, self-absorbed view of many of these stories' narrators. Sometimes, however, my mind wandered while listening, and at times I wished I was reading this instead of listening to it, so I could go back and listen again to what I missed (hard to do with an ipod!) By far the best story, in my opinion, is "Chicxulub", although there are several other memorable stories. At the end of this audiobook is a fascinating interview with the author, in which he talks about his process of writing -- a neat "extra".

This show is almost always entertaining, always informative. I listen to a lot of radio talk shows, and this is one of my favorites. I like the format of approaching one topic and getting different viewpoints on it. A delight to listen to.
