Even better than I remember
Revisado: 03-03-19
Second reading of this book and I loved it even more this time around.
The eternal error men make by imagining that happiness consists in the gratification of their wishes.
That quote tells so much of the story. One family that lives for their own wishes and another that finds happiness through seeking goodness and realizing that the meaning of life is not to get enjoyment out of everything but rather to live for God and the soul.

Abridged version is actually better
Revisado: 10-01-18
My 7 year old daughter and I read a Children’s Illustrated classic version of this story together and enjoyed it. She wanted to share it with her sisters and I thought an unabridged version would only be better. Wrong. Too much minutia to be a moving story or decent moral lesson. Plus the ending was a let down. The BJ Harrison’s reading was excellent at 1.25x speed. Overall though we enjoyed the illustrated classic better.

Historia
The story begins with an investigation into some strange reports of an "opera ghost", legendary for making the great Paris opera performers ill-at-ease when they sit alone in their dressing rooms. Some allege to have seen the ghost in evening clothes moving about in the shadows. Nothing is done, however, until the disappearance of Christine during her triumphant performance.

I thought the musical was a fabulous and imagined the book would be even better. However this is one of those rare times when a second medium improved the story.

Historia
As a Japanese-American fisherman stands trial for murder on an island in Puget Sound, snow blankets the countryside. The whiteness covers the courthouse, but it cannot conceal the memories at work inside: the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, an unrequited love, and the ghosts of racism that still haunt the islanders. First novels rarely attract as much attention as Snow Falling on Cedars. Remaining on best seller lists for months, it has cast a spell on listeners across the country.

There was a good story in there but marred by unimportant irrelevant details
Revisado: 08-27-18
The pace of the book didn’t bother me until the end. About 3 hours before the end (I listened to the audiobook) I was thinking how long can he really drag this out? But really, too much sex. Not important or even slightly relevant to the story.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Information and interesting
Revisado: 06-08-18
Steve West was a great narrator and kept me awake throughout the book. I listened to the majority of it while up nursing my 2 month old. Not sleeping while listening to a book about the need for and power of sleep probably made me feel it’s effects even more. I will be recommending this one as well as using it for text in the health sciences part of my homeschool, where I plan on allowing my teens the sleep they need!

The colorful characters from Greek mythology come alive in exciting adventures captured by the author of The House of the Seven Gables and The Scarlet Letter. Ride Pegasus, open Pandora' Box, kill Medea with her head of many snakes, join Hercules as he flexes his muscles and King Midas as he turn his daughter into gold. The stories, moral in tone, are totally riveting.

My children loved this book!
Revisado: 04-30-16
I learned of this book from a homeschool reading list for second graders. I decided to download the audio version for a road trip I was taking with my daughters. My 7, 5, and 3 year old girls loved listening to it. I did have to stop and explain a few things and I asked questions to make sure they knew what was going on but all in all it was a wonderful choice and I am excited to get the companion book, Tanglewood Tales for our next road trip.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Awesome...
Revisado: 01-29-15
I purchased this book on a whim and was overwhelmed with this book. This history aspect was fascinating. I learned so much about POWs in the Pacific that I'd never heard in school (or from anywhere else for that matter). I felt a real connection with the characters and had profound gratitude for what they sacrificed for my freedom. I loved that the story didn't end with the end of the war but discussed Louis' life following the war and how he dealt with and overcame what he'd been through. I cried when I heard that he became a Christian and personally forgave all his captors. I've purchased it several more times for gifts and am looking forward to the movie, although it will never compare with this book.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

A Historical Adventure!
Revisado: 01-29-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Endurance to be better than the print version?
Simon Preble's narration. It was spectacular! He did an awesome job with the voices.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Endurance?
The voyage across the Drake Passage. Listening to what that crew endured in the most rigorous of conditions was captivating.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When was moving from ice floe to ice floe trying to avoid death by exposure and simultaneously trying to avoid starvation. It was an amazing story.
Any additional comments?
If you are a student of history, exploration, or human endurance then you will love this book. It reads like an adventure story and it is exhilarating when they finally find civilization again, safely.

I can't stop talking about it!
Revisado: 06-12-13
I loved this book. It was so challenging to see this man living by faith; knowing that God would supply all the means for His work to be accomplished. It was a good reminder for me of what Christians faced during the Cold War and why situations are they way they are there now with so few young believers. Embedded in the book was also the reminder not ever to take the Scriptures for granted. So many stories of churches and pastors behind the iron curtain who had few or no Bibles and when they received one, they cherished it. For the word of God is quick and powerful and just getting into people's hands makes a difference. A must read!

Great reading of a heart warming story
Revisado: 04-26-13
What made the experience of listening to Mary Barton the most enjoyable?
Juliet Stevenson's narration!
What other book might you compare Mary Barton to and why?
North and South as far as the tale being set in the industrial revoultion and the conflict between masters and men.
What does Juliet Stevenson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her narration was awesome! She brough the characters to life with emotion; I loved it!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The repentance of Mr. Carson following the plea for forgiveness by his son's murderer.
Any additional comments?
This was a delightful story and brought to life the human struggle between master and worker and her call for men to treat each other as fellow citizens on God's earth, no matter their position in society.
