AI is here and we have to adapt. This is an excellent book to give teachers a reality check about how AI will affect education. It gives lots of practical advice for practicing with AI and how to integrate it into the classroom. This is a must read for any educator.

I suppose if someone had no exposure to Eastern philosophy, particularly Zen Buddhism, they may gain some insight with this book. However, it would be much better to directly study Eastern philosophy.

Appalachia Revisited

I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Allegany County, Maryland. I left at twenty-four. My childhood was not as violent and chaotic as Vance's experienced; I had amazing, hard-working parents. However, my extended family on both sides had these exact experiences. I lived and breathed it when visiting my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. My friends and classmates in the public schools had these experiences, and they profoundly affected me. This chaos swirls around the hills of Appalachia. The general depression and economic dread that Vance described is 100% accurate. Doing "well" in Appalachia means little when you get out of the hollers.

When I left the mountain folk, I experienced many of the same "culture shocks" as Vance described, particularly when I attended graduate school in Philadelphia. I didn't know what sparkling water was; career networking still alludes to me, and the constant pressure of not asking for help will probably never leave me. Reading Vance's book was like attending a long therapy session. Vance gave perspective on hillbilly living and its lasting effects that I did not consider before reading it. I will reflect on his and my own experiences for a long time.

This book could have been very short. If you want to get work done, turn off the electronic devices and stick to a schedule.
P.S. This doesn't eliminate the shallow work, it just gets pushed on to someone else.
