Historia
Idris has neither aged nor slept since they remade him in the war. And one of humanity's heroes now scrapes by on a freelance salvage vessel, to avoid the attention of greater powers. After Earth was destroyed, mankind created a fighting elite to save their species, enhanced humans such as Idris. In the silence of space they could communicate, mind-to-mind, with the enemy. Then their alien aggressors, the Architects, simply disappeared - and Idris and his kind became obsolete. Now, 50 years later, Idris and his crew have discovered something strange abandoned in space.

Was really enjoying it...
Revisado: 04-28-25
It was very interesting and I stuck with it until the F-bombs began steadily increasing. And yes, the British pronunciation of hegemony is different than the American pronunciation.

Historia
It is the distant future, and Baird is a loner, a part time spy, and a notorious alleged thief. “Notorious” for the audacity of her crimes; “alleged” because nobody has ever been able to legally prove she committed any of them. When the hush-hush agency known as the Toolbox recruits Baird, being a clandestine operative seems like a great way to get paid to do what she already does anyway. That is, until a mission goes wrong, and Baird is infected with a deadly virus.

It was a fun listen
Revisado: 04-22-25
I was looking to cleanse my pallet from the cookie cutter scifi I've listened to recently, much of which I gave up on after reaching my f-bomb limit. This was pretty tame, if you don't count euphemisms, but enjoyable. It's a little campy, but that's part of the charm. And I have the majority of the tools referenced in the book. ;)

No, just no. So many clichés.
Revisado: 04-12-25
If you don't pay close attention it's a good book. If your bothered by the constent use of sci-fi (and other) clichés narrated by Batman then this isn't for you. For instance, the Captain looks at his crew and knows each one will perform with unflinching loyalty...even a trio of people he found in the city slums only a few hour prior, one of which hasn't even come off the high was on. The characters are likeable which does the book good.

Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

10 hours in, still waiting to care.
Revisado: 04-04-25
I listen to audio books while driving and during work when engaged in repetitive tasks. So, a longer book makes my wallet happy. Still I want to be engaged. I've stopped listening to books if they are too one dimensional, badly narrated or riddled with the open palm slaps of frequent F-bombs. (New users note: Audible only allows 2 or 3 returns before categorically denying any other requests. Just be aware of this.)
First, the author writes very well, is obviously well read, a world builder and more Herbert than Asimov. But, I'm 10 hours in and am still waiting for the main plot to head in the direction the synopsis tempted me with. I'm 10 hours in and am struggling to know who are main characters, which of their subplots has a bearing on the main plot or, frankly, what their names even are. 10 hours in and I believe there is one character I can quickly connect with events from the book's beginning without a 15 minute preamble when reintroduced. 10 hours in and I'm still waiting to care...about any of it.
The narrator is comfortable and experienced, and who doesn't love a Scottish accent? But, he's no George Guidall or Christian Rummel. Much of the dialogue is flat and some of the accents are more distracting than distinct. Not sure if it's the narrator or the recording hardware, but many sentences start strong but end in a frustrating whisper. So headphones tend to be clearer than a speaker.
If things improve, I'll amend my review.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Performance was amazing story too, but the further along the more the F-bombs grated like nails on a chalkboard. I know I'm in a minority on this but I get enough of that at work.

Entertaining and well developed.

My only complaint is that it slowly became a harlequin romance. It became a bit embarrassing, like that new couple who are oblivious to everyone else around them.

The Captain's voice...just, No
Revisado: 09-17-24
I think the story might of been good, but I couldn't handle the nasal, goofy side-character voice used for the Captain. The narrator was fine otherwise, but I couldn't finish.

Don't worry the music fades away😊
Revisado: 01-13-24
Somehow Geary always makes the right decisions strategically, dealing with non-combatants, and in motivating his fleet personnel. But, I'm ok with it. It's an idealized version of a hero, yet the overall story is compelling. u
I enjoy how relativistic effects and relative speed are explored in the battles. Although there is a lot of redundant exposition of the encounters.
One note to the narration editor: Changes in scene require a longer pause than between paragraphs. Otherwise a listener may not realize the captain's chair is not, in fact, in the bathroom. (-just hyperbole, not an actual event in the book.)

Overall a good read.
Revisado: 06-03-23
While there's a lot of tech talk, the overall plot is easy going. Plot resolutions were sometimes weak, but the characters were likeable. Not sure why some people are offended by the 'politics' and race issues. Racial topics were limited and not overreaching. I didn't get any political vibes at all. Narration had some mistaked, but he did a good job. It won't keep you on the edge of your seat, but I enjoyed listening while I worked.
