Gary Sinise is fantastic!

Bizarre travelogue

Steinbeck's stories tend to read like epic fables, full of symbols, good and evil, etc., and his characters are of a piece, always at home in this mythic world. But it is quite jarring to find these same sort of characters populating a travelogue. None of the people he meets or places in he visits in this book seem real, they feel like stock characters/settings from a story. It's as if Steinbeck has never met a real human being. The effect is bizarre. That said, if you can get past the veneer of fiction, the book is OK, and Gary Sinise does a great job with the narration. The path to salvation is hard, and a bit hokey

W. Somerset Maugham has written some magnificent books. This, in my opinion, is not one of them. I imagine the narrative might have been revolutionary when first published in 1944, but the "westerner going to India in search of enlightenment" trope has been worn pretty thin over the last 75 years, giving a somewhat hokey feel to (some of) the proceedings. That said, Maugham is still a gifted writer, and the audio performance is excellent. There is definitely value here, but I'd recommend listeners start with "Of Human Bondage" or "The Moon and Sixpence" and work their way on from there. #SearchforEnlightenment #WorldWarOne #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes
