Historia
Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it. In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something.

Extraordinary, honest, and hilarious
Revisado: 11-11-23
I've never quite read a book like this. It details Bamford's journey with mental illness, done in such a way which is painfully honest, shocking at times, and always hilarious. She offers a frank look at her life with mental instability, oversharing, as is her brand, never pulling her punches at either herself or the medical profession. It's really her odyssey through various self-help regimens, medical interventions, and breakdowns. What keeps it from being harrowing is her lacerating humor, and, in the audiobook, her perfect delivery. I'll be sure to gift this title over and over again.

Harrowing Memoir
Revisado: 08-03-23
David Ambroz’s childhood is so steeped in neglect, abuse, and poverty, it would make Dickens blanch, yet throughout, his clear-eyed narration and innate resilience offers the faint pulse of Hope. Horrifying, galvanizing, and ultimately inspiring, it is a story that can change your perspective on the world.

Excellent farewell story
Revisado: 01-25-21
It was a true pleasure listening to Mr Le Carré tell his last story. Who knew he was such an excellent narrator as well as writer? The delineation of characters was subtle but remarkable, the pacing, perfect. I believed every word. The story itself could not be more timely, and true to form, he was always a few steps in front of me.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Newton makes the book come alive
Revisado: 09-30-19
I was very familiar with the book, but had not read it for many years so I picked up this audiobook. It was a revelation. Thandie Newton infuses Jane with all the vitality, yearning and determination that she deserves. I had forgotten how funny Jane could be, but Newton brings a out all her facets. Highly recommended.

Historia
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Masterful Telling of a Rollicking Claasic
Revisado: 02-13-18
This was my first encounter with Great Expectations, and my expectations were more than met. The narrator, Simon Prebble, does justice to Dickens words and then some. He has a warm, supple voice, and his character voices are all perfectly delineated without being obtrusive. His Joe Gargery was especially poignant. Dickens’ great humor and humanity shine through in this audiobook. So many great characters! Such cliffhangers! It was a joy to listen to.

Historia
Read in the style of a secret diary, this famous sequel to I, Claudius gives a wry and human view of the Roman world, bringing to life some of the most scandalous and violent times in history. Claudius has survived the murderous intrigues of his predecessors to become, reluctantly, Emperor of Rome. He recounts his surprisingly successful rule; how he cultivates the loyalty of the army to repair the damage caused by his nephew Caligula; his friendship with the Jewish King Herod Agrippa; and his invasion of Britain.

The only problem was that it was too short
Revisado: 02-26-16
It was wonderful hearing Sir Derek perform this role again. I only wish it had gone on longer. There were some tidbits not heard from the BBC series, so that was fun. Highly recommended; I listened to it in almost one greedy gulp.

Historia
The politics of empire-building and the hypocrisies, back-stabbings, and corruptions of Rome's first family come to light. First published in 1934, the book retains a marvelously modern and often comic tone, and is written in the form of Claudius' autobiography. This is gripping stuff, read by one of our finest actors, who also starred as Claudius in the classic television series.

A wonderful retelling
Revisado: 02-21-16
It was great hearing Derek Jacobi reprise his Claudius, almost as if you were having dinner with the old stammerer himself. It reminds one of the BBC series but stands on its own. I only wish it were not abridged! Onward to "Claudius the God," which completes the saga. You can get the unabridged version, but it won't be with the incomparable Sir Jacobi.
