Historia
Considered by many to be Chesterton's greatest masterpiece, this audiobook declares his comprehensive view of world history as informed by the Incarnation. Retelling mankind's story from the very beginning, he shows how all human desires are fulfilled in the person of Christ and Christ's church. With his characteristic brilliance and irony, he argues that Christianity is not just a religion to stand beside other religions, for the fact of the Incarnation sets it apart.

Brilliant, and very dense
Revisado: 09-06-24
Chesterton was a staggeringly giant intellectual. Apart from C.S. Lewis, he's the greatest apologist for Christianity and this book is a powerhouse. Don't give up on it after the first few chapters - there is great payoff to stick with it till the end, even if you have to rewind it multiple times.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Historia
Atrial fibrillation strikes one in four American adults. Not only do people suffering from this condition suffer from shortness of breath, fatigue, chest discomfort, decreased ability to exercise and do activities of daily living, arrhythmia, and palpitations, but their risk of a stroke, cognitive decline and dementia, heart failure, or premature death also shoots way up. Today, a whole new body of research - one most physicians are unaware of - shows that biomarker and lifestyle optimization may put half the cases of atrial fibrillation into remission without drugs or procedures.

This book will grab you by the throat
Revisado: 02-11-24
If you are engaged in the battle of A-Fib, you will be thankful you have this book. And... you will likely hate this book (or aspects of it). The authors are extremely thorough and, to a fault, almost purposely deflating. Among the myriad jewels you'll pick up along the way (and there are many!) you will also have to endure a tone that leaves inspiration and positive outlooks to somebody else. Often a book of this nature starts with the bad news in the first chapter to get your attention. This book, however, revisits that motif obsessively right till the end.
But there is clearly a method to their madness - they want you and I to take this as seriously as anything imaginable. And I actually really appreciate the thrust of that. This is your life (and mine!) they're talking about, after all. And they are nuanced and clearly masters of their fields in Cardiology and Electrophysiology. Also extremely helpful was their chapter on coaching us regarding rigorous questions to ask the doc who would perform an ablation, if we ever find we needed one.
The focus on the controllables - like exercise, biomarkers, diet, stress, et al. is also incredibly helpful and important. Though nutrition experts they are not. So while they overall give solid advice for a general approach to diet, it must be tempered as they are ridiculously hyperbolic on the vegetable front. You get a sense that they are so enamored with one style of dieting that they will eschew some basics to longevity like, well, our need for protein. If you followed their diet to an absolute tee, you would likely be in the bathroom every hour and watch your lean muscle mass decrease dramatically, which on the muscle front doesn't bode well for things like strength, brain function, and living as long as you can.
This review may seem overly negative, but I don't mean it to be. I am genuinely thankful for Drs. Day and Bunch and would love to talk to them someday to glean more of their knowledge. I just think that the reader must be warned that the doctors are not here to play encourager - they are on a mission to wake you and I up in a deeply, no-nonsense way. So prepare yourself before reading this book. But... DO READ IT! It is incredibly valuable, insightful and rigorous. I am thankful I have both the audio and hardcopy, if only a little hopeful they will revise certain aspects.
So reader, be encouraged. Be diligent and serious-minded as you pursue victory in the A-Fib battle. You are not alone. And there is incredible hope to be had. Your condition really can improve. And the improvement may even be dramatic. You can do this. Take this book and lots of other resources and run the race marked out for you!

Historia
Written after his wife's tragic death as a way of surviving the "mad midnight moment," A Grief Observed is C.S. Lewis's honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss. This work contains his concise, genuine reflections on that period: "Nothing will shake a man - or at any rate a man like me - out of his merely verbal thinking and his merely notional beliefs. He has to be knocked silly before he comes to his senses. Only torture will bring out the truth. Only under torture does he discover it himself."

Have we been taught to discount the veracity and deeper meaning of our emotional resonance with the world around us? In The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis looks at the curriculum of the English "prep school" and begins to wonder if this subliminal teaching has indeed produced a generation who discount such a nature.
