Historia
Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

Historia
Shaka Senghor was raised in a middle-class neighborhood on Detroit’s east side during the height of the 1980s crack epidemic. An honor roll student and a natural leader, he dreamed of becoming a doctor—but at age eleven, his parents’ marriage began to unravel, and beatings from his mother worsened, which sent him on a downward spiral. He ran away from home, turned to drug dealing to survive, and ended up in prison for murder at the age of nineteen, full of anger and despair.

Complete bologna from a trash person
Revisado: 06-17-24
I had the experience of hearing Shaka Senghor (called James White from birth until he went to prison for the murder of David Vaughn in 1991) at the Second Annual Washtenaw County Community Violence Intervention Workshop.
His talk left me speechless and angry. This man was being lauded as a hero for his bestselling writings and his associations with Oprah, Obama and others. His emotional transformation from an ignorant street punk into a faux intellectual compliments of the State of Michigan Department of Corrections is shameful. He now goes around peddling his Oprah Bookclub ‘enlightenment’ of his difficult upbringing, teenage drug dealing, 19 years in prison and his now allegedly reformed life as an advocate, author and general charlatan.
It was nauseating to see him brag about his post prison success and accolades and attempt to provide insight to the dozens of minority youth present at the meeting. In his speech and in this book he continues to be a cocky street thug in capable of showing contrition or remorse for taking the life of another human.
His entire attitude is that the world owes him something because of the sordid racist history of our nation and historic inequities. He never apologizes or takes ownership of what he did to land his ass in prison in the first place. His life story is the result of society and other people’s actions against him, never his own free will and poor choices.
Don’t waste your money supporting this arrogant clown by downloading this book.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

I’ve read a lot about Russian intelligence operations in the U.S. and disinformation campaigns from and on the U.S. The Nazi operations in the U.S. before and during WWII are next level frightening. Anyone that cannot see the clear parallels between isolationists of the 30s and 40s and the bullshit anti-Ukraine, racist rhetoric of today’s media and politicians is illiterate.
Being married to a Frenchman and having traveled to Russia as an adult has clearly broadened by perspective on America’s role in global history. Will be insisting my husband listens to this book. My heart breaks knowing the amount of suffering endured by innocent civilians in Europe while corrupt American leaders peddled outright lies.

Historia
The American standard system of measurement is a unique and odd thing to behold with its esoteric, inconsistent standards: 12 inches in a foot, three feet in a yard, 16 ounces in a pound, 100 pennies to the dollar. For something as elemental as counting and estimating the world around us, it seems like a confusing tool to use. So how did we end up with it? Most of the rest of the world is on the metric system, and for a time in the 1970s America appeared ready to make the switch.

I was not expecting the exhaustive history of world events laid out in this text, but I loved every minute of nerdy history! I was regaling my French partner, himself a lover of measuring tapes in both metric and imperial units, with interesting points about the French Revolution and Napoleon and the Bourbons and more for days on end while enjoying this book. As an IT process designer, I do have a bias towards standardization, but this book challenged that thinking.
Excellent read - would highly recommend to any history geek!

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Consider another narrator. The material was very informative, but it was hard to get through the first few chapters. The author’s experiences are insightful and informative. Would not recommend this book for a first time white person trying to grasp the issue of racism in America, but an excellent and short read. Will read again. Thanks to the author for sharing her expertise in this difficult and often derided work of equity and inclusion.

Revisado: 06-08-23
Just listen to it. Don’t argue, don’t feel compelled to agree, just listen to the information. The wealthy want you dead or at best barely alive. We are returning to an era of paupers and serfs working the land, factory, mines, and farms of the elite. The GOP has the American middle class exactly where it wants us.

The Great Lakes - Erie, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Superior - hold 20 percent of the world's supply of surface fresh water and provide sustenance, work, and recreation for tens of millions of Americans. But they are under threat as never before, and their problems are spreading across the continent. The Death and Life of the Great Lakes is prize-winning reporter Dan Egan's engaging portrait of an ecological catastrophe happening right before our eyes.

Every Midwesterner needs to listen to this book!
Revisado: 04-03-23
As a child of Ohio and resident of Michigan I have grown up with a certain awe and appreciation for the Great Lakes. I am never not in awe of their size, beauty, fishing, boating, and history. They are truly unrecognized seas.
This book was heartbreaking with the history of how humans have wrecked this magnificent treasure. Nonetheless, this history is critical for anyone who drinks, bathes, or earns their livelihood from these magnificent bodies of water.
The condition of algal blooms in Lake Erie and the Detroit River are special concerns to me. I appreciated the authors review of these factors.
In the end the book gave me a promising perspective and critical information that I need to be aware of as a Lake State resident, voter, taxpayer, and landowner.
Everyone who drinks Great Lakes water must read this book!

Historia
While the Germans knew an invasion was inevitable, no one knew where or when it would fall. Those manning Hitler's mighty Atlantic Wall may have felt secure in their bunkers, but they had no conception of the fury and fire that was about to break. After the initial assaults of June established an Allied bridgehead, a state of stalemate prevailed. The Germans fought with great courage - hindered by lack of supplies and overwhelming Allied control of the air. This book describes the catastrophe that followed, in a unique look at the war from the losing side.

Horrifying and informative
Revisado: 02-15-23
Having traveled to The Bretagne and Normandie Regions of France this year, I added this book to my library. My mother-in-law was born during the occupation of France while her father was in a German POW camp. The scars of WWI and WWII are still visible on the land and the history of Northern France. Having visited the enormous port of Cherbourg it was fascinating to learn about the occupation and liberation of that historic city. I’m not usually one for military accounts, but this book kept me engaged until the very end. The dévastation of the French countryside, towns and citizens as described in this book is chilling. A poignant reminder of the tragedy of wars.

The American supermarket is an everyday miracle. But what does it take to run one? What are the inner workings of product delivery and distribution? Who sets the price? And who suffers for the convenience and efficiency we’ve come to expect? In this rollicking exposé, author Benjamin Lorr pulls back the curtain on this highly secretive industry.

Despite all our rage we are still just rats that need to eat daily. Give us dear groceries our daily bread, but don’t make us think too hard about how they get there. As a child of Midwestern commodity farmers reared in the go big or get out era of Earl Butz, I grew up hearing the refrains of “The American public isn’t willing to pay the prices necessary for organic or humane food”. Lorr has confirmed that despite the fancier label trends of the last 20 years, my mom and dad are still right.
I laughed, I cried, Lorr has punches holes in my NPR listening stomach. An excellent investment of 8+ hours of treadmill and kitchen cleaning listening. Cannot wait to recommend this to my Whole Foods Cedar Center peeps circa 2010-2011.

Audible - please remaster this recording, it skips around frequently and doesn’t behave as nicely as other books I’ve used on your app.
Nonetheless, James Lowen does an excellent job exposing the real roots of why America is so damn segregated. Making me think much more critically about my own hometown.
