Did not expect it to be such a ‘page-turner’ but it was riveting and I binge listened.

Gory but no story.
Revisado: 09-02-18
There’s a line between true crime and a a pulpy pump of adrenaline. This collection pretends to probe into the psychology and detective work involved in the murders, but falls way short. Chapters are short and mostly center on the gory details of each murder without asking or answering any substantive questions. An hour in, I felt more creeped out at myself for listening than I did about any of the crimes I wanna as told about. Deleted and moved on.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Should be required reading.
Revisado: 08-27-17
The tone can be snarky at time, but I appreciate the dark humor. Really, this be required reading (especially for parents). Three lessons: elect thoughtful leaders, care for others (especially those that are ill and vulnerable), get your fricken kid vaccinated already (or kindly remove yourselves from society). My simplistic summery doesn't do this well researched and resonating history justice. Worth listening to for sure!

A droning list of commands - maybe a better book to read?
Revisado: 01-09-17
Maybe something was lost in translation from English or to voice, but this seemed like an endless list of orders (including some fairly extreme health and beauty commandments) with the occasional quote interspersed.
That said, there were insightful and inspirational words here and there. But the bulk of it seems almost comedically didactic. I listened while on a cleaning binge and tried to take most of it with a grain of salt, but I suspect this is a book best approached visually, not audibly...

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Bryson comes off detached and a little Peter Lorresque. That said, the content is thorough, well told and frighteningly relevant to the current cultural climate of America.

Historia
On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

Vulnerable?
Revisado: 10-26-16
Some funny anecdotes, motivational speeches and interesting points, but ultimately, I don't think that it made a very strong case for vulnerability. Dr. Brown is clearly a strong, accomplished woman and the vulnerabilities that she shared struck me as only surface deep compared to what many women have to face in their personal and professional lives. I would have appreciated detailed examples of other people and their struggles with vulnerability.

Historia
Ruth Wariner was the 39th of her father's 42 children. Growing up on a farm in rural Mexico, where authorities turned a blind eye to the practices of her community, Ruth lives in a ramshackle house without indoor plumbing or electricity. At church, preachers teach that God will punish the wicked by destroying the world and that women can ascend to heaven only by entering into polygamous marriages and giving birth to as many children as possible.

Wow. Outstanding.
Revisado: 03-10-16
Despite the somewhat monotonous narration (the author reads this herself), the story is gripping and I found myself unable to press pause. Bravo to Ruth Wariner for sharing her personal story of hardship so generously, she will certainly continue to inspire!
