Historia
Japan's Holocaust combines research conducted in over eighteen research facilities in five nations to explore Imperial Japan's atrocities from 1927 to 1945 during its military expansions and reckless campaigns throughout Asia and the Pacific. This book brings together the most recent scholarship and new primary research to ascertain that Japan claimed a minimum of thirty million lives, slaughtering more than Hitler's Nazi Germany. Japan's Holocaust shows that Emperor Hirohito not only knew about the atrocities his legions committed, but actually ordered them.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 12-11-24
I just couldn’t get past the author’s clear bias, which given the topic is understandable. His constant histrionic expression of that bias however is not appropriate in a historical study. It bordered on almost racist in its expression. Given many of the terms he used I found myself trying to determine when this book was written. I would have expected to have been written in the late 40s or 50s.
I would have thought that a PhD would approach such an important topic with solemnity and a scholarly approach. In this the book failed miserably. In fact, I found his choice to state so clearly his option ruined this book, which is sad. The topic needs to be addressed, but in a self disciplined and scholarly manner.
On the upside the narration was good.

Historia
Here is a gripping account of the major postwar trial of the Nazi hierarchy in World War II. The Nuremberg Trial brilliantly recreates the trial proceedings and offers a reasoned, often profound examination of the processes that created international law. From the whimpering of Kaltenbrunner and Ribbentrop on the stand to the icy coolness of Goering, each participant is vividly drawn.

Lacked focus on the facts
Revisado: 05-19-24
I have to say the opinions of the authors came through with a great deal more weight than the facts. The snark was off putting.
This is not to say that they glorified the people on trial. However their opinions about the various prosecutors and judges made this feel more like a high school paper than a serious examination of an important event in history.

Excellent book

I had the honor of working with 3 Vietnam nurses back in the 70s and 80s. Without exception they were some of the best nurses I’ve worked beside. Looking back I realize that something about them set them apart. Now I know why.

This has always been a favorite series of mine so I was delighted to buy the audible. I would have given the overall a higher rating had audible not sold only half the book at a time. These aren’t long books to begin with. Having to pay for each half with a full credit stuck in my craw.

Historia
Their story was almost forgotten by history. Now known as the Wereth Eleven, these brave African-American soldiers left their homes to join the Allied effort on the front lines of WWII. As members of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, they provided crucial fire support at the Siege of Bastogne. Among the few who managed to escape the Nazis' devastating Ardennes Offensive, they found refuge in the small village of Wereth, Belgium.

I wanted to like this
Revisado: 12-05-20
I really wanted to like this book. I’m somewhat familiar with the story of the Wereth Eleven and wanted to know more. This was like listening to a ghost story told over a camp fire in 6th grade. I made it to the second chapter. The writing and the narrator were definitely over the top in bad way.

One of my favorites
Revisado: 08-11-20
I loved this book and was excited when it came out on audible. My only disappointment was the narrator. The odd British accents when speaking a characters, like Kerowyn, was very disconcerting. They neither fit the dirty or were well done. Had she stuck to her normal voice I would have had no complaints.

I tried
Revisado: 10-21-18
I tried to like this book. I really wanted to. It is well written. But I cannot. Possibly it’s a cultural thing. I detested Edward. I’ve never been a fan of brooding angry to the point of bullying love interests. He was mean and selfish and I hated him. And it ruined the book for me.

Historia
In 1770, the fuse of revolution is lit by a fateful command - "Fire!" - as England's peacekeeping mission ignites into the Boston Massacre. The senseless killing of civilians leads to a tumultuous trial in which lawyer John Adams must defend the very enemy who has assaulted and abused the laws he holds sacred. The taut courtroom drama soon broadens into a stunning epic of war as King George III leads a reckless and corrupt government in London toward the escalating abuse of his colonies.

I would never have purchased this if I had know it was abridged. The book needs to be savored in full, I was terribly disappointed when I realized I would be unable to do so.

Revisado: 05-30-18
I read the book and loved it, so I was excited to get the audible. I couldn’t make it 5 minutes. The narrator sounds like a 16 high schooler, and not in a good way. I so wish they had used the same narrator as The Ex-Debutant. Susan Bennet was perfect.

Historia
In the South, you always say “yes, ma’am” and “no, ma’am.” You know everybody’s business. Football is a lifestyle, not a pastime. Food — especially dessert — is almost a religious experience. And you protect your friends as fiercely as you protect your family — even if the threat is something you cannot see.

I bought the book because I liked the title and I was looking for something chick lit to pass s night recovering from an orthopedic procedure. It was as another reviewer wrote gut wrenching, but also uplifting and funny.
