Historia
1950: Margaret Devonshire (Megs) is a 17-year-old student of mathematics and physics at Oxford University. When her beloved eight-year-old brother asks Megs if Narnia is real, logical Megs tells him it’s just a book for children, and certainly not true. Homebound due to his illness, and remaining fixated on his favorite books, George presses her to ask the author of the recently released novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a question: “Where did Narnia come from?”

Conservative nostalgia and sexism
Revisado: 02-23-25
The book began somewhat promisingly, but unless you are into sexism and homophobia, I don’t recommend it. If you are nostalgic for an imaginary perfect past when women stayed home to mother their husbands and children, and like to describe young girls as “porcelain dolls” and “little housewives”, then go for it. The young women in this book are infantilized and if one doesn’t fit Klavan’s mold, she’s a poor deluded victim. Ugh. Plus, the otherwise decent writing sometimes tanks into the worst sort of stupid prose.

Stupid decisions & woman hating
Revisado: 01-20-25
The poor, poor male protagonist is stuck in a situation innumerable women have had to cope with… and he continually makes stupid decisions. The plotting is bad and except the narrator, the characterization is too. Plus, the author may not hate women, but he wrote this book as if he does. Do not recommend.

Historia
This groundbreaking and highly acclaimed work examines the two most influential African American leaders of the twentieth century. While Martin Luther King, Jr., saw America as "essentially a dream . . . as yet unfulfilled," Malcolm X viewed America as a realized nightmare. James Cone cuts through superficial assessments of King and Malcolm as polar opposites to reveal two men whose visions are complementary and moving toward convergence.

Great book, and well narrated. I did not know nearly as much about Malcom X as I did MLK, and it was fascinating to see their stories & approaches side by side. I especially enjoyed learning how they moved closer to each others’ positions near the end of their lives,

Veronica is insufferable.
Revisado: 07-08-22
I wanted to like this book, but the protagonist is insufferable - knows-it-all, has-done-it-all, etc. I like a bit of fluff between my more serious reads, but I will not be returning to this series.

So we’ll written, but too long!
Revisado: 05-03-22
Like all of French’s novels, this one of superbly written, with well-developed characters. It just goes on too long and the emotional intensity begins to feel like torture. It could probably be cut by 1/4 or 1/3 and still be a rich, detailed narrative.

Fun Austen-inspired fluff
Revisado: 10-01-21
This book is a fun, if often anachronistic, reimagining of the P&P characters. But the author admits her own creative liberties in the author’s note. I enjoyed this little adventure, and the narration was pretty good.
