Historia
In this sweeping history, Ireland's best-known historian, Tim Pat Coogan, tackles the dark history of the Irish Famine and argues that it constituted one of the first acts of genocide. In what the Boston Globe calls "his greatest achievement", Coogan shows how the British government hid behind the smoke screen of laissez faire economics, the invocation of divine providence, and a carefully orchestrated publicity campaign, allowing more than a million people to die agonizing deaths and driving a further million into emigration.

Sorrowful listening
Revisado: 03-13-24
Some of my ancestors were English, and some were Irish who came to Canada as a result of the Potato Famine. I'll just say that this book increases my respect for the Quakers but makes me less proud of the English parts of my roots.
I recommend this title, but I guarantee it will make you sad.

Historia
The work tells the story of Jane's early life, her experience at Lowood School and as a governess. Her refusal to accept Rochester's love on any but her own strictly moral terms is a passionate cry for independence.

TOO QUIET!!
Revisado: 02-02-23
The sound engineers were asleep for this one!
I have enjoyed hundreds of Audible.com titles that were crystal clear and easy to hear but this production of Jane Eyre falls far short of Audible's usual quality.
The story was engaging and the narrator was expressive but the production values were woefully lacking. No matter what I tried (different headsets, different devices) the volume levels were so low that it was hard to hear.
I made it through the story but it was difficult and it shouldn't have been.
I note that I'm not the only reviewer who said the narrator was hard to hear.

Historia
In this prequel to the international best seller The Ruin, set 10 years prior, bright-eyed Carrie Ryan is at the very start of her career. When she has a hunch about an ongoing murder investigation, she knows it could be her only chance to prove herself and truly break into the “boys' club” of Dublin’s police force.

A good listen
Revisado: 09-07-19
I am more likely to listen to non-fiction, but I enjoyed The Sisters. It was a good yarn read by a great narrator. As well as the action of the story, I liked the details that paint a picture of life in Dublin ... setting the scene without stalling the story. As a bonus, it was the perfect length for my car trip!

Historia
For years Elisabeth Hasselbeck couldn't pinpoint what was making her sick. She consulted doctors and nutritionists, but no one seemed to have any answers. It wasn't until she was close to starving in the Australian Outback, living off the land as a contestant on Survivor, that, ironically, her symptoms vanished. Returning home, she identified the food ingredient that made her ill---gluten, the binding element in barley, oats, wheat, and rye.

Recipes don't work well in audio
Revisado: 11-13-12
The reader does a great job with less-than-great material. The narrative sections were quite all right but just reading lists and recipes out loud does not make for engaging listening. Recipes are best delivered in print format, in my opinion.
