Historia
In the chaos following World War II, the US government faced many difficult decisions, including what to do with the Third Reich's scientific minds. These were the brains behind the Nazis' once-indomitable war machine. So began Operation Paperclip, a decades-long, covert project to bring Hitler's scientists and their families to the United States. Many of these men were accused of war crimes, and others had stood trial at Nuremberg; one was convicted of mass murder and slavery.

I listened for more than an hour, in which many words are used to say little. There might some interesting stories in here but this author isn't telling them. Maybe an abridged edition would be better.

“At one point they tried to calculate when time began, when exactly the earth had been created,” begins Time Shelter’s enigmatic narrator, who goes unnamed. “In the mid-seventeenth century, the Irish bishop Ussher calculated not only the exact year, but also a starting date: October 22, 4,004 years before Christ.” But for our narrator, time as he knows it begins when he meets Gaustine, a “vagrant in time” who has distanced his life from contemporary reality by reading old news, wearing tattered old clothes, and haunting the lost avenues of the twentieth century.

Strongly interiorized, inconsistent world
Revisado: 04-07-22
I listened to the first 90 minutes. It’s strongly interiorized, i.e., heavy on the narrator’s thoughts and light on anything happening. I didn’t like the characters. It’s also inconsistent. Two-inch high plastic soldiers are brought to life and a cat kills one soldier. “We’re brave soldiers but we’re only two inches tall,” the officer says. Then a few pages later he threatens to kill one of the people. The toy soldiers can’t kill a cat but they can kill people? Science fiction worlds can be as fantastic as you want but the world has to be consistent.

Nothing to learn from this book
Revisado: 02-23-22
I plowed through 3 hours 17 minutes before switching it off. Blank writes for large, well-funded startups with many employees that have a new technology and are trying to find customers who'll buy the technology. I started my company thirty years ago to solve the biggest problem in my life. I avoided new technology and built my products with established technologies. I kept expenses down. I'm not rich but I've seen many better-funded competitors come and go. Blank's advice is obvious and repeats himself to make a book out of basic advice.

Run, don't walk, from these cliches!
Revisado: 06-17-20
In Chapter One McKee explains his "arc plot," "mini plot," "micro plot," "no plot," and "anti plot" theory. No one else in the world believes this theory. In Chapter Two, McKee shows you how to rewrite a scene from "Chinatown" properly, with a half-page of inner thoughts for each line of dialogue. I plowed through this melodramatic dreck for an hour before giving up. It's painful to listen to. You could torture prisoners by forcing them to listen to this audiobook. Any producer who saw such a screenplay would throw it in the trash. I didn't listen to the rest of the audiobook, which I'm guessing has a chapter on putting in camera angles, and a chapter about sending producers a baby shoe with your script and a note saying that you want to "get a foot in the door." Save yourself the pain and read "Save the Cat!" After that read "The Writer's Journey."

Historia
When Apollo 11 touched down on the Moon’s surface in 1969, the first man on the Moon became a legend. In First Man, author James R. Hansen explores the life of Neil Armstrong. Based on over 50 hours of interviews with the intensely private Armstrong, who also gave Hansen exclusive access to private documents and family sources, this "magnificent panorama of the second half of the American twentieth century" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) is an unparalleled biography of an American icon.

Loved but the abridged version might be better
Revisado: 10-25-18
This book sometimes has too much detail. I didn't care what pieces of his wife's jewelry each astronaut brought. There's a lot of technical details that an engineer might be interested in (Armstrong was an engineer first and a pilot second) but most people wouldn't care about. Now to compare the book to the movie. The book is much better! My friend didn't read the book before we went to see the movie and she was often lost as to what was going on, e.g., what the Columbia was and why it orbited the Moon, what the Agina was and why Gemini 8 docked with it, etc. The actor who played Armstrong didn't seem like the Armstrong in the book.

This is the remarkable behind-the-scenes story of the creation and growth of Airbnb, the online lodging platform that has become, in under a decade, the largest provider of accommodations in the world. At first just the wacky idea of cofounders Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk, Airbnb has disrupted the $500 billion hotel industry, and its $30 billion valuation is now larger than that of Hilton and close to that of Marriott.
