Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few.

I listened to the original Audible listing, but it had been a while and with a few credits to spare, I elected to give the Graphic Audio version a shot for my second listening. I really enjoyed this version. I think some of the characters, mostly Roy, were exactly as they should be. They did a great job casting him. I did have one criticism though; the voice actress playing Hershel’s mom is fantastic, but the accent… his mom is supposed to be a hard-willed Midwestern (mostly Chicago) momma bear character. In this version, she is a sweet and sugary toned southern black woman. I can see the logic that director and actress used to come up with the accent; which is the trope of a loving and protective Southern momma willing to take on anything and anyone to keep their family safe. This fits the character really well, BUT we know she’s from Chicago in the story so whenever she speaks the need for continuity pulls me out of the performance. That is my only criticism. Everyone did a terrific job, and I’ve already enjoyed many of Hayes’ stories.

Historia
On the night of the new moon, the demons rise in force, seeking the deaths of two men both of whom have the potential to become the fabled Deliverer, the man prophesied to reunite the scattered remnants of humanity in a final push to destroy the demon corelings once and for all. Arlen Bales was once an ordinary man, but now he has become something more - the Warded Man, tattooed with eldritch wards so powerful they make him a match for any demon. Arlen denies he is the Deliverer at every turn, but the more he tries to be one with the common folk, the more fervently they believe.

I can’t help myself..
Revisado: 04-14-21
I keep telling myself that I’m going to listen to the typical novels of this series and not the theatrical performance pieces.. because there are more hours on the traditional audio versions of each of these stories, and because each audio book is broken into 2-3 separate purchases vs the 1 of the original and with a shorter total runtime. Instead, I ended up downloading the full novel and ALSO the performance versions.. and I gotta say, they are totally worth it. Especially since I’m already invested in the story and voice actors. The music is great, sound fx are intuitive and telling, and the pace is addicting. I ended up purchasing every book’s theatrical pieces. I highly recommend the same. As someone with hundreds of fantasy and urban fantasy titles in my account, I find myself sighing many others adopted this style, and considering downloading the theatrical versions of titles already in my library that I’ve listened to before. For instance, the Mistborn series also has a rendition available. I look forward to it.

Historia
Years have passed since the last of the Dark Gods was defeated, and Lothion has entered an age of peace and prosperity. Mordecai’s oldest children have already begun to make a place for themselves, and his youngest are on the cusp of adulthood. By every outward measure, his life has been a success; he has earned his reward. However, Tyrion, the first wizard and brutal liberator of mankind, has returned with an agenda of his own, and dark things continue to stir at the edges of civilization, threatening to undo Mordecai’s accomplishments.

I cannot get behind the performer OR this discontinuity between the series performers
Revisado: 08-13-18
I thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of Mordecai in the Blackmith's son and that entire story arc narrated by McClaren I believe. Then the sequel series narrated by Derek Perkins was also very satisfying. I cannot get behind Alex Wyndham's narration style. I've tried. Even after enjoying the first two series, I could not finish the first book of the prequels. It was already a set of characters that I had not yet developed a loyalty to but it was narrated by Wyndham. I cannot stand that he pronounces cities and places differently than the other two performers. It kills the moment for me and it ruins continuity because I get sucked out of the story and begin focusing on his voice style and performance. I tried another series called Lusam, again performed by Wyndham and I just thought it was awful. I can basically tolerate and get lost in any fantasy series. But Wyndham has such a limited assortment of different voices for characters that it's hard to enjoy fantasy by him as they are usually ripe with many many different characters. He has basically three characters he can do which is 1) the main voice of main character and every other male from 18-50 age, 2) his slightly grumbly old man voice for elderly men or anyone who works as a pirate, inn keep, blacksmith etc 3) his "female" voice which just awful and he uses it for anyone under 18 or any female. I have never given a negative review on single thing in my life and I am an absolute sucker for any sci-fi or fantasy, but this dude is just boring and terrible. I'm sorry that I have to give such low marks to a Michael G. Manning novel but even with all the characters I've grown to love in Mordecai's world, I hated it. Stop hiring this dude!
