In the shadows of New York City lies forbidden North Brother Island, where the remains of a shuttered sanatorium hide the haunting memories of century-old quarantines and human experiments. The ruins conceal the scarred and beautiful Cora, imprisoned by contagions and the doctors who torment her.

Drags and drags
Revisado: 09-21-23
This has an interesting premise, but literally nothing is explained. I struggled to finish this because of how slow it was. I understand that there is a second book coming (or already out?) but this did not live up to its great reviews for me.
Somehow a family has gotten away with experimenting on a woman sent to a plague hospital but she’s magically immune to viruses unless she leaves the island. In all the years of experimenting on her, they don’t think to look into the island itself or the vines that barely came into play. This was more of an ode to the incurably diseased or chronically ill people of the last 100 years which isn’t a bad thing but at least be forthcoming instead of marketing this as a mystery.
All in all, not for me.

Kids have imaginary friends. Rachel knows this. So when her young son, Billy, miraculously recovers from a horrible flu that has proven fatal for many, she thinks nothing of Delfy, his new invisible friend. After all, her family is healthy and that's all that matters. But soon Delfy is telling Billy what to do, and the boy is acting up and lashing out in ways he never has before. As Delfy's influence is growing stranger and more sinister, and rising tensions threaten to tear Rachel's family apart, she clings to one purpose: to protect her children at any cost - even from themselves.

Revisado: 07-19-23
I really enjoyed this but it felt like a lot of filler that didn’t drive the story, especially when hearing it from Rachel’s perspective. Overall really neat concept and great narration. I would have loved a little more of the sci-fi aspects and a little less day to day life.

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 07-14-23
I really love Riley Sager but this one wasn’t a hit for me. Most reviews claim that it’s slow and I would have to agree but that wasn’t the worst bit. I found myself constantly doing the math because the storyline felt ramshackled to make everything work for a plot that was ultimately too far fetched. I love a good twist but this one felt like a soap opera.

Along with the hot flashes and body aches, she can’t look in a mirror without passing out, and the voices in her head have been urging her to do unspeakable things. Fired from her job in New York, she moves back to her hometown hoping to reconnect with her past and inner self. What she finds instead are visions of terrifying mutilated specters that come with increasing regularity.

Ick… In the best way
Revisado: 07-14-23
This one has been all over FB and TT so I finally broke down and got it. The body horror and female rage was epic and had me hooked. I felt like I need to decompress after each listen because Cassidy’s story telling is so vivid and the narration by Susan Bennett was wonderful. Would recommend.

Historia
A woman wakes up, frightened and alone. The room shaking and jumping like it’s alive. The noise is terrifying. Where is she? Stumbling through a door, she realizes she is on a train carriage. A carriage full of the dead. A personal hell unfolding in an apocalyptic future. This is Night Train, a terrifying ride set on a driverless locomotive, heading for a collision somewhere in the endless night. How did the woman get here? Who is she? And who are the dead?

Awful
Revisado: 06-14-23
From the derivative plot to the "he said/she said" being the only way dialog was expressed, this was pure garbage. I'm so disappointed that this had a stamped approval from Neil Gaiman on the cover when it felt like a loose rip-off of Snowpiercer and a few other prominent novels. It makes me question if he even read it or if it was purely some kind of elitist assumption. I went in thinking it had a cool premise and neat trio of main characters, but everything fell so flat. There were interludes throughout the book that didn't really add anything to the overall plot that gave a false sense of hope that there would be some kind of great reveal at the end that never came. I always try to find something I enjoyed about any book I read or listen to but this one was tough. The narration was okay when sped up a bit which is the only bright spot. All in all, I'm glad I purchased this on sale because it's probably one of the worst I've listened to in a long time. Save your money or credit.

Zahra knew every detail of the plan. House of Wisdom, a massive exploration vessel, had been abandoned by the government of Earth a decade earlier, when a deadly virus broke out and killed everyone on board in a matter of hours. But now it could belong to her people if they were bold enough to take it. All they needed to do was kidnap Jaswinder Bhattacharya - the sole survivor of the tragedy, and the last person whose genetic signature would allow entry to the spaceship.

Just ok
Revisado: 06-05-23
A little generic, a little overdone. I was expecting more of a sci-fi horror but nothing about it was really either. It felt a bit like another book of the month thriller that just happened to be set in space. I can definitely see how it would hit the spot for some but it just wasn’t what I was looking for. The narration was good, I could have done without hearing “he/she said” for pretty much all the dialog though. Not terrible, not great.

He was born an outsider, like the rest of his family. Poor yet resilient, he lives in the shadows with his aunt Libby and uncle Darren, folk who stubbornly make their way in a society that does not understand or want them. They are mongrels, mixed blood, neither this nor that. The boy at the center of Mongrels must decide if he belongs on the road with his aunt and uncle or if he fits with the people on the other side of the tracks.

Gritty coming of age tail
Revisado: 05-30-23
Another fantastic story by Stephen Graham Jones for my list. I knew coming into this that it wasn’t going to be like MHIAC or TOGI as it isn’t exactly horror. It’s gritty and bloody and provocative, but it’s no ghost story. This book has all the same elements as his more terrifying books, but underneath it is a coming of age story peppered with family tragedy, loss, and revenge told through the eyes of a young wolf that might be too smart for his own good. I love a book that gives me scenarios that I could have ever imagined and Mongrels had me hanging on every word. A werewolf running down rivals? Sure. A werewolf eating glitter for a gag? Hilariously awesome.
Don’t listen to any of the negative reviews on here. The ones that say “nothing happened” probably weren’t listening hard enough.

Historia
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

Mehh
Revisado: 05-18-23
Before listening, I saw this being talked about on TikTok and read the glowing reviews here, but I'm not sure it's worth the hype. It was very predictable and not super original. This could have had a Stephen King amount of detail, but it was shallow and fell flat for me. The bits of "scary" were a bit diluted with the number of boring chapters of the characters standing around doing nothing but accepting their fate. Even the twist at the end could be seen coming. I would have been that annoying person in the theater going "OMG how can you not see it" had this been a movie. Maybe I'm picky or went in with high expectations, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I will say that Jacqueline Milne was wonderful and gave a great performance.

In the near future, advances in medicine and quantum computing make human cloning a reality. For the wealthy, cheating death is the ultimate luxury. To anticloning militants, it’s an abomination against nature. For young Constance “Con” D’Arcy, who was gifted her own clone by her late aunt, it’s terrifying. After a routine monthly upload of her consciousness - stored for that inevitable transition - something goes wrong. When Con wakes up in the clinic, it’s eighteen months later. Her recent memories are missing. Her original, she’s told, is dead.

Revisado: 04-13-23
I really enjoyed the writing style and pace of this. Although a ton happens, it never got overly confusing and stayed consistently interesting. It was my first read of FitzSimmons and I guess I’m a fan now. The first book in a series has to be amazing for me to want to continue to the next (if I can live with the ending) but I’m not sure if I’ll grab the second. This was definitely good and I love January LaVoy but I might try another of his first.

Simon is the best delivery boy that Mr Edwards’s restaurant has ever had. He’s on time every time, and he’s gotten nothing but good reviews. But he needs more money. His mother’s medical treatment won’t pay for itself, and his father is already working three jobs to try to make ends meet. But it might just be his lucky day: Mr. Edwards has another job for him. It’s more delivery work, but not the usual kind. You might even say that it’s out of this world. Oh well. Beggars can’t be choosers, and the pay is fantastic.

Revisado: 03-30-23
This was a really fun read with great narration. It kind of made me think if Jason Pargin, David Cohen, and Douglas Adams all got together to write and said “You know what would be funny? Cosmic guinea pigs” and went from there. I was finished this in two sittings and I can’t wait for the next in the series. I have some theories about Simons future so I’ll definitely have to find out!
