Different stories coming together into a powerful novel
Revisado: 04-23-25
Isabel Allende never disappoints. She is a brilliant storyteller. In this book she brings stories about children brutally being separated from parents in Nazi Austria and today on the US border into a tale of human resilience, solidarity, love and compassion.

Good story, not so good reader
Revisado: 05-07-24
The story was entertaining. Takes you to Paris’ many delightful neighborhoods.. The food and wine descriptions transport you to wonderful French restaurants in Paris and around France. The discussions about art, writers and the Shakespeare Company were entertaining and enlightening. But the reader is too breathy and frequently injects unnecessary anxiety into the text with her tone. I wish she read more naturally how people actually speak.

Historia
In this Audible Exclusive performance by Matt Lucas of Great Expectations, Charles Dickens demonstrates that conscience, loyalty and empathy are virtues far more valuable than intellect, wealth and social standing. First published in Dickens’ own periodical, All the Year Round, the novel was divided into nine monthly instalments, from December 1860 to August 1861. Unsurprisingly, it was an instant success and managed to sell over 100,000 copies per week. Though written at a challenging time in Dickens’ life, when the impending breakdown of his marriage loomed over him, Great Expectations proves to be one of his most optimistic, comical and romantic novels.

Historia
It was supposed to be the highlight of her career, the pinnacle for which she’d worked all her life. And as Hattie McDaniel took the stage in 1940 to claim an honor that would make her the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award, she tearfully took her place in history. Between personal triumphs and tragedies, heartbreaking losses, and severe setbacks, this historic night of winning best supporting actress for her role as the sassy Mammy in the controversial movie Gone With the Wind was going to be life-changing. Or so she thought.

Did not like the reader
Revisado: 03-11-24
The story and the delivery was disappointing. Author depicted Hattie as a resentful, person rather that someone who broke barriers. She was portrayed as a woman who made one bad choice of men after another. How could someone who accomplished so much get herself attached to men who only wanted to take advantage of her. Don’t think the author captured the strength of Hattie’s accomplishments properly. Can not recommend .

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Historia
In a powerfully intimate and non-traditional (or "new-fashioned") memoir, Kwame Alexander shares snapshots of a man learning how to love. He takes us through stories of his parents: from being awkward newlyweds in the sticky Chicago summer of 1967, to the sometimes-confusing ways they showed their love to each other, and for him. He explores his own relationships—his difficulties as a newly wedded, 22-year-old father, and the precariousness of his early marriage working in a jazz club with his second wife.

I don’t possess the poet’s mastery of words, so I will just say; read it, listen to it, gather with your family and read aloud, listen again, and again. You will laugh, cry, think, feel, learn about yourself and about others close to you. This book is a gift to all of us. Thank you Kwame Alexander!

Very good story, lacking narrator
Revisado: 06-23-23
Very good suspense, clue chasing, justice seeking story involving three branches of government. Unfortunately the narrator breathy speech and same tone for different characters detracted from what could have been a very excellent listen.
