Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Simply powerful
Revisado: 02-10-23
Viola Davis strips herself down to the bare essence of herself. Many times, I had to stop listening—it was too hard in its simplicity to allow me to ignore.
Well written; well read. It deserves the Grammy it received.

Historia
This is the second volume in a best-selling series of true stories from "[a]n extraordinary landscape populated with befuddled bears, hormonally-crazed elk, homicidal wild boars, hopelessly timid wolves, and nine million tourists, some of whom are clueless." In Kim DeLozier's world, when sedated wild black bears wake up unexpectedly in the back seat of a helicopter in mid-flight, or in his car as he's driving down the highway, or in his office while he's talking on the phone, it's just another day in the park.

Marginally More about Elks than Bears
Revisado: 01-19-23
I enjoyed it, but about 5 hours is about all it is worth investing. At first I thought the ranger was female (Kim), but then realized Kim is also a man's name! That did make a difference since the narrator is male.

Historia
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

Present a Smile to All You Meet
Revisado: 01-11-23
In several ways, I think I enjoyed Obama's first book more. Yet, in other ways, this book speaks the message I think she was interested in giving, rather than the biography the first one in reality was.
There were times when I felt it was too "rah, rah," yet those messages were important for her to voice. From my studies (divinity) and just general living (I'm soon to turn 73), many of these I have heard, read, experienced myself. But good reminders! Many of her tips--from her mother, from Angelou, from her own experience/insight--I wish I had been exposed to at a younger age. One that I have incorporated into a "Resolution" for 2023, is to enter a room smiling. Smile upon greeting anyone. Encourage first and critically respond later.

The First Last Good Politician?
Revisado: 12-15-22
Chernow has written another masterpiece. Scott Brick did a masterful job of narrating it. I have been slowly reading 2-3 biographies of all our Presidents. Certainly, from Chernow's research, the United States was quite lucky to have had Washington to lead our foray into democratic government. He was formed into the President he became through his leading the army of north/south, urban/farming class men. His aristocratic tendencies were smoothed out through that long war. He may not have been that good a general, but he had the patience to lead and to out wait the enemy. The book also points out the ambivalent attitudes Washington had toward slavery, attitudes he would often deny.

An AUDIBLE book re: music with next to none in it
Revisado: 09-29-22
A good look at the songs we sing in times of trouble and joy. Disappointing in that this is an AUDIBLE book, and it included very little (very little) music! No singing. It was nicely read by Meacham and McGraw, but the publishers really cheated in not using their platform to the max. I do not recommend this as an audible book.

More than I ever realized there was to maps and those who understand them! Plus other interesting tidbits. Glad I listened to it: not sure I would have finished reading it had I not. Not that Heyborne did a poor job, but I wish Jennings had narrated his own work.

Beloved around the world, Randy Travis has sold more than 25 million albums in both country and gospel genres and is considered one of the finest performers of his generation, admired by superstars across the musical landscape, from Garth Brooks to Mick Jagger. From a working-class background in North Carolina to a job as a cook and club singer in Nashville to his "overnight success" with his smash 1986 album Storms of Life - which launched the neotraditional movement in country music - Randy’s first three decades are a true rags-to-riches story.

Great book, good guy, but production is terrible.
Revisado: 08-23-22
This book suffers from such poor production--well, it is sad that Travis didn't benefit from a first class, professional, polished presentation. Each chapter is announced. This is good--I've listened to books that didn't. I've also run across books that evidently didn't use periods, so perhaps I'm being a bit harsh. This book decided to eliminate paragraphs. One sentence on topic A just ran right in to some totally different topic. Was a shame.
The book itself detailed Travis's life to the nth degree. Perhaps there were sins of omission, but it seemed like it was all there. If you aren't familiar with his work, listen to a few of the songs he mentions! You'll be in for a real treat.

Historia
Much has been written about Berdis Baldwin's son James, about Alberta King's son Martin Luther, and Louise Little's son Malcolm. But virtually nothing has been said about the extraordinary women who raised them. In her groundbreaking and essential debut The Three Mothers, scholar Anna Malaika Tubbs celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America's most pivotal heroes.

Thank you Dr. Tubbs for sharing these 3 women
Revisado: 06-21-21
This is an important book: How could we ever hope to understand anyone without understanding their backgrounds? Every mother may not influence every child, but these 3 women were very important in the lives of their children. I was continually surprised by what Tubbs had to tell me. I am ashamed to say that I never thought of who was James Baldwin's mother. I only thought of Louise Little to think how sorrowful it must be to have your beloved son killed. I was shocked to find that I did not know Martin Luther King, Jr.'s mother, Alberta, was gunned down in their church. Why did I not know this? I am thankful that I am learning more and more black history--rich history--today.
My one (very small) critique of the audible production of this book is that the author/narrator consistently glottalized the consonant T. I found this speech pattern extremely distracting. We all have regional accents, but I don't expect to listen to them in an audible book.

Historia
One day, 14-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find two notes in her mailbox, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl.

Sophie’s Philisophy is Hilda’s Fantasy?
Revisado: 05-07-21
Or is it vice-versa? The review of philosophy was welcomed, but was missing Heidegger and Wittgenstein and Rawls (briefly touched upon). However, the fantasy rather ruined it all, at least for me.
