I am a real fan of Jennifer Chevarini books. I truly love the Elm Creek Quilter series, and all her books.

The series originally sounded interesting but that!s because I am a woman who sews. However, as I began reading her books, I found she pens stories not just of interest to women who sew and quilt, but who think and ponder issues of this complex world. I’ve often looked back on different era’s of history and wondered why. Why with the information made available to them, they persisted in keeping the vote from women, why Lincoln waited so long to emancipate the slaves??? So many questions, so few real answers. Yet in her books, Ms. Chevarini takes on these questions, and though the answers often aren’t what we would like them to be, at least my understanding of their place & circumstance in time is pondered and openly spoken about. I truly can say, after reading this and some of her other books, I’ve gained a great deal of knowledge about these and other complex topics. And on top of that, I love the way she looks at and talks about friendships and caring amongst women in organizations and groups and how nourishing these groups are for the women within her stories. I really enjoy her stories and the complex history each woman brings to the story line.

This book gives a real understanding of how truly awful the Civil War was for both sides of the conflict. Everyone was affected, whether a man in their family was killed or not. Friends lost husbands, sons; children lost fathers. Friends lost friends. And even if no one died, men lost arms, legs, and were mentally wounded even if they returned home with arms and legs intact. It was a truly gruesome war. And yet, women learned they could accomplish more than they ever dreamed possible. They forged friendships with women they never would have associated with under normal circumstances. They ran farms, learned reading the paper did not make them less desirable as a woman, nor doing a job like nursing. The world did not open to them, but it made a lot of changes.

I wonder who Jennifer Chevarini will write about next. Whoever it is, I can hardly wait to read the book.

I love the way Karen Kingsbury always gives us Bible verses. And the way the story helps us see following God’s will in our lives is always the best way.
