Historia
Gemma Guillory has lived in the Australian Outback enclave of Rainier her entire life. She knows the tiny, red-dust town’s ins and outs by heart, knows the people like they are her family, their quirks as if they were her own. She also knows her once charming town is now remembered for one reason and one reason only: three innocent people died there at the hands of a serial killer. The last stop on the Rainier Ripper’s trail of deaths fifteen years ago was her picturesque little tea shop.

Loved the twists and turns, loved the way the police’s choices affect the town and the townspeople. Well crafted.

Unpredictable and fun
Revisado: 01-15-23
Great narrator, great story. I was surprised and delighted by the twists and turns. If you enjoy a good psychological thriller about interesting people that's not a gory story, you'll enjoy this!

I think you'll find that a few of the twists are a bit Telegraphed, but that doesn't take away from a fun story. I enjoyed it.

Historia
Amber Patterson is fed up. She's tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more - a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted. To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne - a socialite and philanthropist - and her real-estate mogul husband, Jackson, are a couple straight out of a fairy tale. Amber's envy could eat her alive...if she didn't have a plan.

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 05-14-21
This psychological drama is well written and enjoyable to listen to, but I didn't think it was a great story. I found the way female characters were presented to be frustrating: money grubbing, either naive or conniving and largely unsympathetic and unlikeable.
It didn't find it fun enough to be "escapist" though I did enjoy it enough to finish the whole thing.
I wouldn't recommend for anyone feminist.

The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Emma escapes the chaos of her dysfunctional family by dialing up random numbers on the phone in her bedroom, just to see who'll answer.

Historia
In Riversend, an isolated rural community afflicted by an endless drought, a young priest does the unthinkable, killing five parishioners before being taken down himself. A year later, accompanied by his own demons from wartime reporting, journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in Riversend. His assignment is to describe how the townspeople are coping. But as Martin meets the locals and hears their version of events, he begins to realize that the accepted wisdom - that the priest was a pedophile whose imminent exposure was the catalyst for the shooting - may be wrong.

Long & twisty
Revisado: 02-03-20
You definitely won't guys how this unfolds, and it's a great twisting story for when your mind needs an escape, but ultimately, the author feels a bit like he is trying to be a bit too cute by half.

Lame & anti feminist
Revisado: 12-17-19
I should have quit early on when I realized the protagonist was wholly unlikeable: florida wide of an orthopedic surgeon who seened to have nothing to offer. But the story had me curious. To bad it was basic and just utterly reductive. Thank God it was only a couple hours.

Good story. Well written. Just not very fun.
Revisado: 04-04-18
I enjoy Laura Lippmans works. This one was different, just a much darker tone. A twisty psychological drama, less of a murder mystery. It was a good story, just wasnt quite what I wanted or what I expected.
While I applaud the author for doing something new, I highly recommend reading the reviews if you are hoping for another Tess Monaghan book to see if its what you want.

Historia
Writing in the tradition of Dennis Lehane and Greg Iles, Attica Locke, a powerful new voice in American fiction, delivers a brilliant debut thriller that readers will not soon forget. Jay Porter is hardly the lawyer he set out to be. His most promising client is a low-rent call girl and he runs his fledgling law practice out of a dingy strip mall. But he's long since made peace with not living the American Dream and carefully tucked away his darkest sins: the guns, the FBI file, the trial that nearly destroyed him.

Great characters, nice depiction of the realities of Houston. Its a bit slow in the middle and not as captivating as Locke's later novels, but ultimately it was a very pleasant listen.

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Rural Mississippi hasn't aged well
Revisado: 11-16-15
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The patronizing approach of the narrator and Jake Brigants to all of the African-american and female characters gets old. Maybe its an accurate representation of the legal community of rural Mississippi in the late 80s, but this book was written recently, and it made the book difficult to enjoy.
Any additional comments?
Well written, but I found the shock ending to be anything but shocking.
