James Scott Bell’s books never disappoint me. Mike Romeo is a fascinating character. Intelligent, educated, and widely-read (as the author must be as well), he was also a professional fighter for a time. He’s running from personal pain, and I look forward to learning more of his story in future books.

Note: I listened to the audiobook, narrated by James L. Rubart, and I highly recommend the listening experience.

Once again, James Scott Bell proves why I love his how-to books on crafting great stories. His *Write Your Novel from the Middle* remains my favorite, but *Super Structure* is an excellent addition to my library. No matter how many books you've written, there is always something new to learn to help you write even better. Bell explains in a way my brain can understand.

Oh. My. Word. I am wrecked. My heart is broken. I can hardly breathe. Best book I've read this year.

The two narrators, Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell, made me see and experience Julie and Maddie completely. The sighs. The slight holding of a breath. The accents. All were perfection. I hate "overacting" in audiobooks, and trust me, there was none of that in this one. It was simply a masterful performance.

I don't know how I made it from 2012 when it released until 2020 without knowing about this novel. But I'm glad I stumbled on it when I did. The storytelling is amazing. It isn't a light story by any means. It is painful and brutal and thrilling and honest about things that happened in WWII (even if the story itself is fiction). But oh, Julie and Maddie. I will never forget these two heroines. Never.

I absolutely LOVED this home front WWII novel. I cared about each of the four women who worked at the shipyard. Their lives were each very different, and yet I felt a part of the friendship that developed between them. I have a fondness for WWII novels set on the home front and the burdens shared by the women and families left behind. But Lynn Austin really hit this one out of the park.

The narrator, Christina Moore, did a great job with the accents required. Often, I dislike such attempts but not this time.

I first read The Wednesday Wars in 2011, and I have never forgotten it (especially the yellow tights and the story that surrounds them). Recently I bought the audiobook so I could read it again. Glad I did. It was just as much a delight the second time through. Toward the end of the book, I drove to a wedding, an hour drive each way along a winding mountain road. I laughed out loud numerous times, and the drive seemed to fly by.

The Wednesday Wars is set during the school year of 1967-1968. The protagonist is 7th grader Holling Hoodhood, the only Presbyterian in his class. Every Wednesday, half the class goes off for Hebrew instruction and the other half goes off for Catholic instruction. A Presbyterian, Holling is left in his teacher’s care. If not for him, Mrs. Baker would have Wednesday afternoons off. Therefore he is sure she hates him as only a teacher can and is out to kill him in devious ways, including by making him read Shakespeare plays.

I don’t want to give away too much of the story. But I will say this: I laughed and laughed and laughed. I related to all the angst of a 12 year old. I remembered those atomic bomb drills where we got under our desks. I also ached over parts of the story. The writer is truly gifted at saying much with a few words. He also reminded me why I’m glad I’m not a 7th grade boy dealing with the 8th grade boys on the cross-country team. Read the book to know what I mean. LOL! And it is a rare writer who can bring me to tears while I’m walking on the treadmill, but that’s what happened to me when he so wonderfully described the sound Mrs. Baker made when–– (Nope! Not gonna say more.)

If you were ever a kid, if you were ever in the 7th grade, and especially if you were a 7th grade kid during the turbulent ’60s, you need to read this book.

Such a moving and expressive story of the prodigal son. And set against the background of professional music and tent revivals somehow made it come even more alive. This is a story that shouldn't be missed by anyone.

I've read this series four or five times over the years. It was delightful to listen to this book read by Michael York. It made me feel very much in the world created by CS Lewis.

This is a book about the reading life, and it is filled with important words for novelists, IMHO, as well as all readers, especially for those who are followers of Christ. It is written specifically to girls/women, but I'm sure the truths within would ring just as true to the opposite sex. The lists of recommended reading throughout this book are amazing, but it is the wisdom and encouragement and joy in the rest of the narrative that I have highlighted countless times throughout. It's a book I will return to again, probably multiple times. If you are a book girl, if reading is something you love to do (or want to learn to love to do), treat yourself to BOOK GIRL.

Any additional comments?

The author handled a difficult story line with compassion and delicacy. Not a light read and yet full of hope.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, have it be an actual novel with an ending.

Could you see Stranded being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No, it has no ending.

Any additional comments?

I don't remember why I bought this book for kids in audiobook. Probably it was priced really low, and as a Survivor fan, I thought it would be a fun read. This is the first of three books in a series, and sort of the first in six because the kids get shipwrecked a second time. What I didn't know is that the authors broke up one book into three parts.

I HATE being forced to buy more books just to reach a resolution of one story. There are a number of series I have never finished reading because I was so irritated that the author left me hanging. And I've never bought more books by those authors either. This is going to be another one of them. I won't know how the characters survive until they are rescued, but I can live with it. The authors should have been more considerate of their readers.
