Would like to start saying that im no big fan of ghosts, zombies and.... vampires.
I find the whole trope rather boring and uninteresting but... there are exceptions, and this fantastic book is one of them.

Its a pure 80s entertaining urban vampire story that never slows down: it has violence, horror, sex and action.
Imagine a violent and more adult mashup of movies such as The Hunger, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, etc

The cast of characters aint that large and they all have a role to play, are easily likeable and dislikeable without having to force feed you 200 or 300 pages of "character development".
The language and jokes are very direct and raw (the way I like it) and does no concessions to political correctness or any agenda, except the "have fun reading" agenda.

Chet Williamson does a very good job characterizing different people and its easy to listen to.
The sound quality is on spot.

Lots of people bash this title for several reasons: poor writing, too many characters, too graphic, etc.
On the other McDonalds, despite being pure trash food, triumphs worldwide.

Highly recomended for fans of horror, violence, sex and gore.

I like the premise of the story but really, overall feels like many other british horror books and movies: very good premises and a rather not so good execution.

Its not terrible by any means as long as you like the genre but it did not impress me.
"Lots of wasted potential" is the thing that comes to mind often about this one.

The narration is correct, easy to listen and follow, no complaints there.

Very good continuation of the series, known for its slow pacing and lots of events going on.

The main characters of the first four books are now either old, parents, unhappy or just dead... "and they were not so ever happy as they tought they would".
And I like it that way, just as life.

The new younger cast is well portrayed, interesting and they dont create a feeling of instant dislike as it seems to happen in other franchises when it comes to teenagers or just young people new to the reader.

Same goes for the new and old villains: Williams put a lot of effort in showing lots of interesting insights of the norn and sitha societies which turns out to be just as bad and flawed as humans, each in their own way.

In many ways the story here is much more interesting than in the first four books, but then again here we dont need to go through as many character presentations as in the original saga.

Word of advice: if youre totally new to this series do not start with this one.
Start from The Dragonbone Chair.
Just dont come expecting to reach page two and have an "And then he swinged his brutal battleax and killed three enemies which fell bleeding to the floor in agony. He spat on their corpses and continued the massacre."
This saga is the exact opposite of what Conan or Gotrek and Felix offer in terms of instant action (both approaches are good, just trying to differentiate)

Andrew Wincott does a great job as narrator, nothing more to say there.

If you enjoy long stories which develop slowly, with lots of scenes of the type "they sat next to the fire for the next 50 pages and spoke about legends of old, their enemies plans and origins and their own and decided what to do bla etc... while having tea, and beer, and cookies" combined with good adventures happenning at the same time give this a try.

Edit: they never sat next to the fire for the next 50 pages but the idea is wonderful in itself.

The very first Battletech novels written back in the middle 80s, these books are a perfect example of franchise writing and militares scifi.
Instead of being an assault mech slugfest, the story here revolves around the humble beginnings of one of the most famous merc units in the Battletech universe.
Light and medium mechs for the most part, usted with cunning and skill against superior odds, along with infantry and vehicles .

And thats the attractive of it, like when you start a campaign in a videogame and every single bit of resource is vital.
The narrator does a good job and even brings a smile when characterizing some of the villains in a pseudo russian accent or plain "im evil" tone of voice.
Very 80s.
Buy it if you are a Battletech fan.
Check other reviews if this is your introduction to the setting.

Chances are youre an Alien fan if you want to get this one so ill try to be short:

The book gives a very nice insight of the toughts of all characters, some interesting background details about their whereabouts, conflicts, etc.

The structure of the events depicted in the movie remains the same with some more details and includes some of the scenes depicted in the directors cut such as the cocooned crew etc.

Some listeners consider it to be slow and boring but then again its not a movie its a book, which means more attention to detail. Always liked slow beginnings as long as the events unfold later.

The voice acting does not annoy me in the least so im giving it five stars (appreciate the characterization of Parker and Brett specially).

As for the story... if you havent watched the movie better go do that first, then decide if you want to buy this audiobook.
If you watched the movie a billion times and never get enough of it add it to your cart, its a no brainer.

I like Gemmell because he wrote his stories in a very direct no bullshit language, with simple but very memorable characters and actually interesting villains and always showing how both sides in conflict had flagrant flaws (General Karnak in looking at you).

My favourite moment in the book is when Cadoras and Waylander have their final conversation and farewell. For some reason that moment of insight into the bad guy feelings, showing his most humane side struck very much since the first time I read it, years ago, to the point that made me more fascinated with Cadoras than Waylander at that point in the book.

As a negative aspect: never fancied much the moral turn Waylander experiments, from being some kind of Mad Max in a fantasy setting to rediscover love and wish for a better life. But even as it is its very well written so yeah. The book gives some moral lessons, criticizes human nature but it never does it in an overly pretentious or righteous way as one would expect in other fantasy franchises such as some of the first Salvatore´s Drizzt stories.

The narrator, Sean Barrett has a great voice and apart of the fact that overall love this book and the story, im giving it 5 stars to performance simply because of how well he tells us the story.

My Barker´s favourite.

For me this is the best written stuff by Barker by a longshot.
Still got the paperback from my adolescence (which I stole from the public library back then -had to pay a fine but got myself a first spanish edition so yea-), which has gone through several reads.

Its gross and beautiful and rough while it offers zero comfort zone when it comes to endings (or beginnings), just as a good horror story should be.
Mamoulian is among my favourite villains of all times, to the point that I really liked him more than the main cast.

However if you intend to acquire this recording without having read the book first I would recommend you to check several reader reviews around the internet to be sure of your purchase, or even better, read it first.
Otherwise if you just want to listen your favourite Barker novel, go ahead.

The performance by Vance is ok, but im giving it only four stars because I kinda dont like the sound quality when comparing it to other narrations by different readers (not Vance´s fault, but rather the quality of the recording).
