I find the quality of mysteries and true crime FILLED with this occult nonsense which is making more of a 3rd generation Millennials superstitious, more into fairytales and irrational views ( since a critical mass of Esalen-type Baby-boomers were dumbed down as a generation but are now controlling Publishing and media) to prefer this waste of time, medieval nonsense and emotional neurosis of others made into iconic, heroic tropes. You can’t find a good mystery audible book or podcast not reinforcing this SJW Trope that is in every genre but particularly demeans the very essence of good detective work: FACTS, science, rational thought. It’s tragic that the publishing world is contributing to this irrational nonsense that belongs in fiction not non-fiction books and podcasts. I can hardly find an audiobook anymore that doesn’t pander to this, where detectives are really bad social workers wallowing in feelings not good detective work. This reminds me of the 60s 70s when schizophrenics were seen as wisdom purveyors which they are doing again with transgenders. I respect their choices but we are going down a very dark road to make their choices that cause so much suffering to them something to hold up as heroic for our children and adolescence to model. This was pure propaganda to reinforce the current political climate coming out of La la Land.

Fun characters, good plot, I will buy more in series, It is not Nagio Marsh, nor Agatha Christie, but still it had good pacing, good description of people and places. A little too much emoting for a good detective series but it was still a fun ride.

Would you consider the audio edition of Surfeit of Lampreys to be better than the print version?

Haven't read print version.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes

Have you listened to any of Philip Franks’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, he is terrific .

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It resonated with a certain type of eccentric family I have experienced several times in my life.
This is what makes Nagio Marsh so wonderful. Her characters are timeless, and, in a sense, so are topics, and cultural milieu, which proves the adage, the more things change, the more they remain the same.

Any additional comments?

Just think Philip Franks and James Saxon are both fabulous narrators, really amazing actors so that it seems one is hearing AND watching a stage play, which is why Nagio's stage experience brings so much to her writing. And both narrators seem to totally bring that reality to life.

Where does The Franchise Affair rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is just stellar, great British mystery and fabulous narrator. I usually prefer male narration but this was the best of all I have enjoyed. There was no character she was not able to bring to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Franchise Affair?

How contemporary a 1940's embedded context was to our own times.
