Historia
D-Day is approaching. They don’t know where or when, but the Germans know it’ll be soon, and for Felicity "Flick" Clariet, the stakes have never been higher. A senior agent in the ranks of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) responsible for sabotage, Flick has survived to become one of Britain’s most effective operatives in Northern France. She knows that the Germans’ ability to thwart the Allied attack depends upon their lines of communications, and in the days before the invasion, no target is of greater strategic importance than the largest telephone exchange in Europe.

Historia
We are living through the most prosperous age in all of human history, yet we are listless, divided, and miserable. Wealth and comfort are unparalleled, but our political landscape is unmoored, and rates of suicide, loneliness, and chronic illness continue to skyrocket. How do we explain the gap between these truths? And how should we respond? For evolutionary biologists Heather Heying and Bret Weinstein, the cause of our troubles is clear: The accelerating rate of change in the modern world has outstripped the capacity of our brains and bodies to adapt.

insightful and a bit of hope
Revisado: 09-30-21
each chapter ends with actionable steps the reader can take to address some of the issues detailed in the chapter which I really liked because it gave a sense of hopefulness that we can better our situation even in the face of incredible challenges.
I love that they show how anyone can develop a truly scientific mindset that revolves around a critical and curious way of being.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

not my favorite follett book
Revisado: 10-29-20
it was entertaining but a little too predictable. I have been on a bit of a Ken follett binge, The evening and the morning, a dangerous fortune and now a place called freedom. this one definitely ranks lowest. the sex scenes are kinda embarrassing rather then steamy and you know right off the bat who you're going to hate when in past books there is more tension and character development. I like the time period though. I'd love a Ken follett revolutionary war book

Historia
Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the Black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the Black community’s ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American dream.

compelling
Revisado: 09-20-20
candace builds her case chapter by chapter and she definitely wontl me over. I am a registered Democrat but have been doubting my political affiliation since the protests following the death of george floyd turned into violent riots and the message of combating police brutality mestatisozed into all out hatred for the USA in totality.

watched the netflix show first
Revisado: 09-02-20
I frankly really enjoyed what the Netflix show took from the book. While the storylines are quite different the show really stayed true to some of the central and crucial themes of the whole story. I really like how the house itself is its own personality, hungry, and both the book and the show explore this concept. One element cross over that i really liked was Nell's cup of stars...

Historia
From Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States to the New York Times' 1619 project, the modern Left views American history through the lens of competing oppressions, replacing the traditional understanding that all Americans are part of a shared journey toward the perfection of universal ideals. Their attacks on the values that built our nation, from the rights to free speech and self-defense to the importance of marriage and faith communities, are insidious because they replace each of them with nothing beyond an increased reliance on the government.

Historia
The shift toward automation is about to create a tsunami of unemployment. Not in the distant future - now. One recent estimate predicts 13 million American workers will lose their jobs within the next seven years - jobs that won't be replaced. In a future marked by restlessness and chronic unemployment, what will happen to American society? In The War on Normal People, Andrew Yang paints a dire portrait of the American economy. Rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation software are making millions of Americans' livelihoods irrelevant.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.
