Historia
Trauma nurse Aly Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. She likes the one she’s landed on just fine. To her, nothing could top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

Jacob Morgan’s voice work is doing most of the heavy lifting here.
Revisado: 03-15-25
This was my first time hearing Jacob’s voice.
And once this book was finished, it was delightful to read so many reviews not only for this title, but on so many other books that cite his voice as being the the cherry on top of a great story, or the only thing keeping them from DNFing a book that had no other redeeming qualities.
Thus I can’t help but wonder if it is the voice actor who is responsible for a great amount of this book’s success. Because, clearly, this is why it is a “top listen” on Audible™️.
And knowing that, I assume the writer & their publisher is seeing some additional income from this uptick in the charts , and I would hope they are not only grateful to the voice talents for this, but that they are aware had they not made the book available in audio format, as some authors choose not to do, perhaps it wouldn’t be as nearly successful, or, even as well received. And that so many of us , who mindlessly absorb all sorts of content , from WWII Historical biographies (yes, I know -I am deranged) to This particular genre (yes, I know- I am wholesome) we appreciate the nod.
Despite the very unique 1st act of this book, the second half felt like I was listening to a different story altogether.
I found myself having to remain hopeful that our two main characters would reappear eventually,
As there is a lot of setup for this relationship to go badly for them, but it seems like they are going to be fine, and well. Ok?
Maybe I am missing something but, the two main characters kinda sorta commit an “action” that is somewhat similar to what one of the main characters has been fretting over internally for most of the 2st act. And we understand this is their biggest fear. But when they do it together, it’s okay?
In fact, the outcome is that there aren’t any consequences? so Yay? I found it almost too tidy and very bizarre.

Historia
Since time immemorial, the Haddesley family has tended the cranberry bog. In exchange, the bog sustains them. The staunch seasons of their lives are governed by a strict covenant that is renewed each generation with the ritual sacrifice of their patriarch, and in return, the bog produces a “bog-wife.” Brought to life from vegetation, this woman is meant to carry on the family line. But when the bog fails—or refuses—to honor the bargain, the Haddesleys, a group of discordant siblings still grieving the mother who mysteriously disappeared years earlier, face an unknown future.

It was all too easy for me to immerse the superb Actors who some may have seen featured from those Mike Flanagan limited series, such as “Hill House”, or “Midnight Mass”, into the roles that this Author’s imagination created for this book’s story.
As I felt as though the Flanagan cast could easily accept this author’s narrative world and its constructs as true to the natural order of the world, and in my head, it was easy to see them build it around the narrator.
Because in these shared universal narratives, it’s just a matter of fact that some families happen to inherit haunted houses, others inherit an enchanted pool of very thick water that you have to offer tribute to “or else”.
Some families have huge mansions, that contain a hidden trap door, that leads to a place in the floor, called the “forbidden root cellar”, that long ago, swallowed up the old caretaker, but in fact, it was actually the original owner of the house.
But then there are other more normal families, that just have your run of the mill- typical Bog on their inherited wild antebellum property, that your family has apparently had had a compact with. But, ya know , that’s just, ….well…
heck,
that’s so commonplace & pedestrian, right?
I don’t even think I even need to explain it.….right?

Colleen Delany is my inner Voice
Revisado: 12-20-24
Don’t skip the credits because you’ll learn that Colleen Delany is not only an incredible narrator, but is listed as a producer of this series. (As well as many other titles)
I’m continually impressed with the quality of production and the voice talent that this company is bringing to the business of audiobooks, especially when it involves rather complex narratives, such as the one featured in this book, which has so many moving parts.
At the time of writing this review, there is usually a 3 month period between each part of the book’s release. And for those of us with brains that have high visualization processors that react to the full sound effects and multi-voice tracks, it’s very hard to wait for the rest of the story.
Thus, the only suggestion I have is a renegotiation clause with whatever entity you deal with, so that there is no longer a pause or waiting period on the segments/parts of books.
Keeping the cost the same number of individual credits, As we understand your company must be compensated for their extraordinary talent.
But girlfriend, to hold this specific group of listeners back, feels like we are caught in your hands and collectively holding our breath.
It feels like we are a particular ancient statue of Cthona, in the hands of a certain former Sunball player, patiently and involuntarily waiting to be dunked in a basket .

Best book in the series. After you’ve finished the series, you’ll be back, re-listening to this one, dozens of times.
Revisado: 08-23-24
The first book in this series was recently released as part of my free audible plus subscription. And now? I have depleted all of my available credits!
CURSE THE CAULDRON OF COMMERCE!
That’s how captivating this particular series was for me after that first free book, but after listening to the rest, I find that this one, “Mist & Fury”is my favorite & the one I like to rest my head on, as these are books you might find you’re-listen to more than once.
It’s my favorite book of the series as it is as of 2024.
As for how it works in to the full story, and compares to the 1st book, it’s probably why it’s so good. As It starts similar to book 1, but that is the slow burn of it- it has plans for all of us that actually began in the early parts of book one, and in slow simmering shifts of tonality, you discover the true intention that the authors has had planned for the reader.
But it is written well and not too abruptly, so, you are in board for this wild ride the entire way through.
For those of you contemplating this graphic audio version, it’s dependent on how you enjoy your audio books:
Have you ever listened to podcasts from PRX? Or any other higher end production studio podcasts production studios, and if so, do you enjoy them? As they usually include a lot of great sound quality and extra effects in the background. Another thing you can do for free is listen to is modern radio drama podcast, such as “the truth” to see if you like hearing multiple different people talking and speaking roles for each character, with full soundtrack and sounds at all times.
As a person with a theater background, I live these versions and am so glad they exist for this book series. It’s become addictive for me now as far as how I want to absorb nonfiction content.
If you’re someone who’s brain enjoys audiobooks but, you know that you like listening to books without outside audio distractions, and that having just one narrator’s voice & no other background noises or any other music being played makes it better, then definitely, just get the other non- “graphic audio” version.

Historia
A bomb planted by the Irish Republican Army exploded at 2:54 a.m. on October 12, 1984. It was the last day of the Conservative Party Conference at the Grand Hotel in the coastal town of Brighton, England. Rooms were obliterated, dozens of people wounded, five killed. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was in her suite when the explosion occurred; had she been just a few feet in another direction, flying tiles and masonry would have sliced her to ribbons. As it was, she survived—and history changed.

More of a research project than a deep dive book missing follow ups on anyone still alive that was involved.

In NPR’s Fresh Air, this was book review title was touted, as
“In 1984, Margaret Thatcher was nearly assassinated — a new book asks, what if?”
Where is this “what if” part?
I think the author addresses a sentence or two to that premise in less than one paragraph at most.
Which ti me was a little disappointing. Now, if I missed a large portion of the book devoted to this topic, I apologize, but I don’t see where it is. And I do t see how it deserves to be the lead of a review.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Between 1937 and 1945, approximately 55 million people perished in the series of interrelated conflicts known as the Second World War. No continent was left untouched, no ocean unaffected. The war led to the eclipse of Europe and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers; ushered in the atomic age; produced, in the Holocaust, the most horrific crime ever committed in the history of Western civilization, and led to the end of Europe's colonial empires around the world.

Ahead of his time on his approach for something from the 1990s
Revisado: 02-01-23
A prequel for any of Dan Carlin’s Hardcore history fans. Dr. Childers gave this series of lectures in the 1990s, and some of the topics and more unknown stories he was approaching had never been discussed. So to hear this, so many years on, and how this subject is now talked about on WW2 podcasts, is very similar.
My only question is the clapping between the chapters, and that is sounds repetitive, as if it is automated. Otherwise, I could easily re-listen to this.
And I would enjoy more narrated works by this author & fellow Tennesseean.

Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

Historia
Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought - and whose outcome was in greater doubt - than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to previously censored testimony.

This is the book you’ve been trying to find, with the unforgettable ending.
Revisado: 09-01-21
Stick with me for a moment.
If you saw the 1995 Motion Picture about the Apollo 13 moon mission, perhaps you watched the film knowing full well the outcome.
Or maybe you were born a few years after this event and knew just the basics;
The Apollo 11 crew made it safely back to Earth, despite terrifying complications they encountered 2 days into traveling towards a moon landing and had to slingshot around the moon to get back to Earth instead of the mission to land on it.
Despite knowing how their history played out, you watched and waited for these 3 astronauts with a slight tension in your seat at the movie theater, as I did, in 1995, you worried for a little over 3 minutes of what was Radio silence as the command module plummeted from space toward the ocean hoping they wouldn’t burn up in our atmosphere, and splash down safely to Earth. Which, in the back of your mind, The historical record of events tells you they will, but still, you’re gripped by the storytelling.
This book has a similar effect on me. I knew how the Historical Version of The War ended, I know what happens from A to B. But there are moments in this book that kept me in the same heat racing clutched/edge of my seat, where I was reminded of that same emotional unknown that I felt when I saw the movie for Apollo 13, regardless that I knew the outcome on paper, I didn’t know until this book the personal accounts and details of what was going on inside what were up until hearing this book, wide views and broadly painted strokes as it was happening. This pulls a finely focused lens onto moments and more so, onto people, that aren’t just ones who have parks and streets named after them, but you’ll never forget what they did.
And yes , the last chapter is something I find I listened to no matter the weather. And I share with friends. No matter their taste in literature.
