Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

His best yet.
Revisado: 07-24-24
T always tells wonderfully complex stories. In Covenant he tells at least four that could be stand alone novels. Then he brings the stories together in ways that seem natural, even if unanticipated. His characters are rich, interesting and full of life.
I first knew of Dr. Verghese when he was in El Paso. A friend and I went to hear him read that was several novels ago. Listening to him again was a pure pleasure.

Disliked everything. It is not worth writing fifteen words. Foolish, insipid, boring, predictable, caricature of a novel.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Once again he makes the unbelievable intriguing. At the same time he makes fairy tale characters more real.

Historia
One late fall Sunday in Southern Minnesota, a farmer brings a load of soybeans to a local grain elevator - and a young man hits him on the head with a steel bar, drops him into the grain bin, waits until he's sure he's dead, and then calls the sheriff to report the "accident". Suspicious, the sheriff calls in Virgil Flowers, who quickly breaks the kid down...and the next day the boy's found hanging in his cell. Remorse? Virgil isn't so sure, and as he investigates he begins to uncover a multigeneration, multifamily conspiracy.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Filled with the charm of magic realism
Revisado: 04-21-21
Wonderful characters. The strength of family forms the core of this story from beginning to end, love, imperfect people, humor and magic. I didn’t want it to end.

Historia
Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

Terrible and Wonderful
Revisado: 03-22-21
Recently I heard a long interview of Tim O’Brien and knew I had to listen to this book. I’m so glad that I have. Ply aces and some people were familiar from my youth. Most importantly a sense of the way the American soldiers came to deal with an impossible situation informs my understanding. My brother served in this war. I think I can see a little of his reality in ways that I couldn’t until now. Thanks to Mr. O’Brien for this
