Historia
A coup has thrown the kingdom of Farshores into turmoil, and one of the pretender’s first moves was to order mercenaries to invade the Mage District and put all its inhabitants - men, women, and children - to the sword. There is one survivor: Horace Stonecutter, the youngest son of the Stonecutter family. Consumed with anger and a hunger for retribution, he journeys out to find who ordered the murder of his family. Along his bloody journey, he meets kings, princes, princesses, noblemen - and not so noble men. May God have mercy on his enemies - because he won’t.

Spoilers
I must admit, I absolutely enjoyed this book. The character development, the captivating magical elements, everything about it had me hooked. That is, until the ending, which left me feeling as though it was all some sort of dream sequence. While not entirely, that's the impression it gave off. Our protagonist lived a life, mastered his magic, endured trials and tribulations, only for it to be revealed as an illusion, a result of being entangled in dragon magic.
Despite the ending, I still enjoyed the book as a whole. The narrator did a fantastic job, bringing the characters to life with distinct voices and an engaging presentation. Admittedly, there were instances of rapid power growth, where the protagonist swiftly transitioned from being a nobody to a formidable individual with immense magical abilities. However, I found myself quite drawn to this aspect, and although the main character made a few frustrating decisions, it wasn't overwhelmingly terrible, and I was thoroughly immersed in the story.
But then we reached the end, and it felt like everything we experienced was abruptly dismissed as an illusion. True, there were hints that the story could be expanded upon in future books, should the author choose to do so. However, it still left me with a sense of the rug being pulled out from under me, and a somewhat unsatisfied feeling.

Excited but .. a bit disappointed.
Revisado: 07-12-23
I've listened to the first 9 books in this series, and while they weren't exceptional, they provided good value for the money, and I became invested in the characters and the overall story. When I discovered that there was a book 10 outside of the collection I had just finished, I couldn't resist diving into it.
However, this particular book took a darker turn. Yes, it's set in a post-apocalyptic world with the infected, and yes, humans often behave like jerks and worsen things. But in this installment, I felt it delved too deeply into dark themes, particularly rape and attempted rape. It deviated from the tone established in books 1-9, which were indeed dark and unsettling with plenty of death, but didn't focus extensively on this specific aspect. In those earlier books, instances of such violence were mentioned but not dwelled upon, often serving to highlight the main characters' personal struggles and their perceived failures to intervene. However, this book had prolonged and uncomfortable descriptions of sexual assault that made me, as a listener, feel uneasy. For that reason alone, I would advise against listening to it if this content is likely to bother you, as it did for me.
Apart from that, the story unfolded, offering glimpses into where the characters ended up after all these years. It introduced new ideas about the whites and their healing abilities and mortality, which I appreciated. However, the journey to reach those revelations felt marred by the excessive focus on disturbing elements, dampening my overall enjoyment of the experience.

Historia
Well, this year, after the Spring Planting season, I’m really gonna relax and put down roots. It’s the slow life for me. Sure, the talking animals and cultivators coming to live with me are a bit weird, but this year everything is gonna be basically normal. There definitely won’t be any Heavenly Tribulations, ancient formations, or cultivator issues to deal with . . .

A fun romp of being overpowered and not realizing
Revisado: 07-12-23
I've thoroughly enjoyed this series thus far. It does start off a bit abruptly with "the before," which isn't fully explained beyond "I died, I showed up here, accept it." However, once you move past that, I'm quite satisfied with the progression and development of the story.
I appreciate that the narrative has expanded to include the world of cultivators, the introduction of evolving spiritual animals, and how everything unfolds smoothly.
To be honest, there isn't much more to say about this except that I feel the story was well-crafted, the narrator does an excellent job, and overall, I found myself thoroughly engaged without resorting to eye-rolling moments or feeling frustrated with the main character's decisions. For that, I'm grateful.

Found myself smiling more often than not ...
Revisado: 07-12-23
I'm still enjoying this fourth installment of the series as I continue listening. The narrator does a fantastic job maintaining a steady pace without awkward pauses or lulls when transitioning between characters.
Overall, this story feels like a positive experience for James. Although the direction it was heading in was quite predictable, I still found the process of getting him involved in the game and the development of relationships to be enjoyable.
While not an exceptional story, it's a good one that has kept me engaged with the series. However, there are moments when it becomes somewhat monotonous, especially during the lengthy explanations of stats and such. Travis Baldree tends to go on for five to eight minutes, explaining things like 'X does Y, and 1 plus 2,' and it can feel a bit excessive. I've learned to either tune those parts out or, if I'm feeling particularly impatient, use the quick jump forward feature. I understand that it's part of the story, but at times it can feel like it drags on in that manner.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Started slow but hooked me.
Revisado: 07-12-23
Honestly, in terms of value for your money, it's definitely worth it. The story has a substantial amount of narration, but overall, it's a good deal considering what you receive.
Initially, the narrator's performance was a bit slow, as it seemed like he was still trying to find the voices for the characters. However, by the time the second or third book rolled around, he had it figured out, and his reading and presentation became more natural.
Given that it's a zombie apocalypse book, there were a few dark moments that might make you cringe. However, the author didn't dwell on them excessively. Instead, they focused more on the characters' reactions and the hindsight of what could or should have been done. Despite this, the story kept a steady pace and remained engaging.

Sarcastic fun
Revisado: 04-11-23
I picked this up on a whim and I am very pleased with it, I've already picked up the next in the series.
the dark humor and sarcasm of the main character honestly just makes me laugh. more than a few times I found myself chuckling at the introspective antics of the main character. he's a little bit damaged but at the end of the day I felt it actually made for a much more interesting setting for the character.
the performance of this is basically the best part to be honest though, he gets the characters he adds some depth and he really brings a deep fun to everything. some narrators just kind of drone on and don't actually put any pitch or cadence into their reading but this guy really nailed it. he's one that I'm going to actually look up and follow because I just like how he does things and quite bluntly whomever is hiring this guy is probably doing themselves a hell of a service and getting me to look at books that I otherwise may not.

picked this up on a whim and thoroughly enjoyed it. not my normal style of audiobook or even genre, but I found myself hooked and I really liked the interesting way it took things.
part of the litrpg genre, but didn't seem overly heavy handed with stats and the somewhat tedious process that is given to those.
well worth a listen, and I'm currently looking to see whether or not there's additional books to this series.

This is a completely new author as well as genre for me and I took a risk on it when it was on sale and decided to see what it was all about. I'm hooked! I absolutely love the story as well as the narrator who does such a fantastic job bringing the characters to life.
Not the type of book I normally go for, but I'm certainly looking forward to the next one and others in this genre as well now.

Marsalis is one of a new breed...literally. Genetically engineered by the U.S. government to embody the naked aggression and primal survival skills that centuries of civilization have erased from humankind, Thirteens were intended to be the ultimate military fighting force. The project was scuttled, however, when a fearful public branded the supersoldiers dangerous mutants, dooming the Thirteens to forced exile on Earth's distant, desolate Mars colony. But Marsalis found a way to slip back.

Revisado: 09-21-08
I have been in a sci-fi mood lately and this one fit the bill nicely and what was more satisfying was the fact that this was one of those completely random titles I downloaded and found myself interested in it enough to listen to it twice.
Excellent book which I wouldn't mind having turned into a series but this one is tied up pretty well so I doubt that'll ever happen.
Well written, well narrated! Science has created several variants on the human gene by splicing and doing the dastardly with them and in doing so they created a group of super soldiers as well, called Variant 13. Most of them have either been killed off or shipped off to camps or Mars as they are just too dangerous to allow out in public but a few of them have managed to get out amongst humanity or to break out of captivity.
This is where the main character of the book comes in as he is a twist who hunts twists (derogatory name for variants), and he is one intelligent and hard assed individual .. but then he has been made, and trained to be that.
Pick it up, you'll enjoy it.
