Dumb
Revisado: 05-30-22
I like this kind of book generally. I’ve even read, and liked, books by these authors before. But this is just too dumb. It’s sentimental, everyone always says the right thing at the right time, everyone is unrealistically super supportive and validating at all times, even in high pressure situations. The Navy SEALs always do things with lightning speed, with ferocious speed, with extreme power. Very fast! They are so great! The bad guys are all very evil or stupid and they smell bad. It’s a book that only a silly person could like. I had to bow out after a few hours. Don’t waste your time or money on this.

Liked it
Revisado: 08-19-21
I’ve loved for example the Jack Reacher, John Rain and Grey Man books and I really like the first book in this series also. The fact that the main character isn’t superhuman with infinite fighting ability makes it more enjoyable. I found it more well written than many books in this space that I won’t mention. I’ll be getting more book in the Jack Winchester series.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Pretty good but kind of silly
Revisado: 06-06-21
The premise for the story, the conspiracy, is hard to believe. The action is pretty good mindless fun. The worst thing about the book is that it’s written kind of awkwardly. Everyone is “highly trained”, everyone does things “expertly”. It reads like: X does Y in an expert way, his movements expertly efficient from years of expert work in the field of expert killer apex predators. The book would probably be 20 % shorter, and much much better, if all the fluff was removed. Don’t these publishing houses have editors?

Historia
From Mark Greaney, the New York Times best-selling author of Mission Critical and a coauthor of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels, comes another high-stakes thriller featuring the world's most dangerous assassin: the Gray Man. While on a mission to Croatia, Court Gentry uncovers a human trafficking operation. The trail leads from the Balkans all the way back to Hollywood. Pretty good!
Revisado: 01-31-21
Yes, the parts written from Court’s perspective are written in the first person present tense, ie “I look around the corner, [etc]”. It’s a change. But honestly, it’s not that bad. I’d say most brains can adjust to this.
It’s a pretty good book for the series, not the best but not the worst.

It’s alright
Revisado: 05-16-19
It’s okay but it’s not as good as the other Grey Man-books. Not sure if it got too wrapped up in the relationship stuff or if there was just too many slow and unnecessary parts that could have been skipped over or related some other way because it doesn’t add tension or drive the plot forward. There was a lot of stuff about the Korean scientist, a lot of build up. The good thing about the other books is that stuff just happens and keeps happening and then it accelerates even more and then it’s over. There was a really big fighting dude and the parts with him reminded me of the cave troll in the Lord of the Rings movies. That cave troll fight wasn’t enjoyable and would just never end. I’m rambling but anyway, like I said, good but not great, and I’ve loved the other books. Read it if you’re invested in the series and want to know what happens to the characters. If you’re not, probably skip this one.

Not bad, not very good
Revisado: 05-05-18
As a John Rain fan, this book reads almost like a book from a different writer than Eisler. Not sure why. It's more of a standard thriller. The ending is also disappointing.

Historia
What makes a legendary assassin? For John Rain, it was the lessons of love, war, and betrayal he learned in Tokyo in 1972. Fresh from the killing fields of Southeast Asia, Rain works as a bagman under the watchful eye of his CIA handler, delivering cash to corrupt elements of the Japanese government. But when a delivery goes violently wrong, Rain finds himself in the crosshairs of Japan’s most powerful yakuza clan.

One of the best John Rain books

I didn't have very high hopes for this prequel but I was surprised to find an entertaining, honest and kind of raw book here. Out of the whole series, this will probably stick with me the longest.

Historia
John Rain is back. And “the most charismatic assassin since James Bond” ( San Francisco Chronicle) is up against his most formidable enemy yet: the nexus of political, military, media, and corporate factions known only as the Oligarchy. When legendary black ops veteran Colonel Scott “Hort” Horton tracks Rain down in Tokyo, Rain can’t resist the offer: a multi-million dollar payday for the “natural causes” demise of three ultra-high-profile targets who are dangerously close to launching a coup in America. But the opposition on this job is going to be too much for even Rain to pull it off alone.

Kind of a silly book
Revisado: 05-05-18
I love the other John Rain books, but this is a little bit silly. It reads more like a movie script and it lacks the atmosphere of the earlier books. Still diverting enough, still entertaining in a way.
