Historia
It is 1872, and a series of gruesome murders is the talk of London. Mycroft Holmes - now 26 and a force to be reckoned with at the War Office - has no interest in the killings; however his brother Sherlock has developed a distasteful fascination for the macabre to the detriment of his studies, much to Mycroft's frustration. When a ship carrying cargo belonging to Mycroft's best friend Cyrus Douglas runs aground, Mycroft persuades Sherlock to serve as a tutor at the orphanage that Douglas runs as a charity, so that Douglas might travel to see what can be salvaged.

A nice adventure
Revisado: 09-30-21
The narrator was excellent - each character had a clear “voice” so it was easy to tell who was speaking. The story was entertaining - it definitely felt like Victorian London. Looking forward to listening to the next story.

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

A good class but tries to do too much
Revisado: 10-22-18
I enjoyed the class, and felt the instructor was clear and easy to understand. But he tried to cover too much and he just flies through the years from about 30 AD-180AD, an era I would have liked to know more about. He does a good job balancing politics and conquests with information about daily life.

Repetitive
Revisado: 08-31-18
There were some valuable concepts here and the author uses good examples to make his points but he really beats them to death. He also rehashes the original idea again after the example was done. I felt the narrator was clear and easy to listen to, but I found it difficult to stay focused on the material with all the repetition.
It’s also a lot of great ideas but not much practical advice beyond “let it go”. So if you are about the ideas I recommend this, if you want something more practical then try something else.

Historia
Discover why Buddhism is such an astonishingly lively and adaptable religion with this series. In just 12 accessible lectures, you'll learn how Buddhism transformed the civilizations of India and much of Asia, and has now become a vital part of Western culture.Buddhism's core philosophy, as you'll learn, is that nothing is permanent-all is change. With this in mind, you'll plunge into an introductory look at this faith. You'll unpack the Buddhist idea that all of life is "suffering" and that there is no permanent self.

A Very Good Introduction; but not a Course.

The start I was looking for
Revisado: 08-06-18
I joined audible for the great courses - in hopes of expanding my horizons a little. I have always wanted to find out more about Buddhism and I think this course was a great intro. I thought Professor Eckel was easy to understand and seemed very knowledgeable about the subject and had traveled in Buddhist countries. The second half about the different types of Buddhism was quite interesting and I wish that had been a bit longer, but I think it got the job done for those who want to learn more about Buddhism.

Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

How history should be taught
Revisado: 07-19-18
I am new to the great courses, but the concept of telling the story from the ordinary persons point of view is nothing I ever learned in school! I think it makes history much more relatable and interesting. I bought this to listen to on my commute and had trouble turning it off when I got home. Professor Garland is so engaging that after listening to 48 lectures, I am downloading his other courses.
