Historia
Michael Andor Brodeur is a Gen-X gay writer with a passion for bodybuilding and an insatiable curiosity about masculinity—a concept in which many men are currently struggling to find their place. In our current moment, where “manfluencers” on TikTok tease their audiences with their latest videos, where right-wing men espouse the importance of being “alpha,” as toxic masculinity and the patriarchy are being rightfully criticized, the nature of masculinity has become murkier than ever.

Such an enjoyable listen!
Revisado: 06-21-24
This book draws on the author’s own history, as well as his vast knowledge of weight lifting, classical history, art, and other topics that he blends perfectly into an excellent book. It is laugh-out-loud funny at points, cringe-worthy at points, touching at points. The reading is spot-on as well, delivering the ideas perfectly.

Historia
For Ingrid Rojas Contreras, magic runs in the family. Raised amid the political violence of 1980s and '90s Colombia, in a house bustling with her mother’s fortune-telling clients, she was a hard child to surprise. Her maternal grandfather, Nono, was a renowned curandero, a community healer gifted with what the family called “the secrets”: the power to talk to the dead, tell the future, treat the sick, and move the clouds.

I don’t recommend.
Revisado: 10-11-23
Some parts are interesting, but overall poorly constructed. Irritating conjunction of fluent Spanish with English feels pretentious and forced—great Tia???? Infused with mysticism which also feels forced.

The background for the story is real, which makes this novel even more engaging. Lovely characters desk with their distinctive griefs via the wind phone, providing a meditation on loss and acceptance.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

This is great writing, memorable characters living their all-too-human lives, in the middle of contemporary issues. Kingsolver’s best since Poisonwood Bible.

Historia
Elegant, profound, and riveting, Mad, Bad, Dangerous to Know illuminates not only the complex relationships between three of the greatest writers in the English language and their fathers, but also illustrates the surprising ways these men surface in their work. Through these stories of fathers and sons, Tóibín recounts the resistance to English cultural domination, the birth of modern Irish cultural identity, and the extraordinary contributions of these complex and masterful authors.

I am mad, sad, and disappointed in this book.
Revisado: 08-11-19
This author simply did not use his prodigious character insights as previously revealed in, for example, Testament of Mary. I was hoping for a strong understanding of the character of the three fathers, and instead got a rather awestruck presentation of how their awfulness (and they were, indeed, awful) influenced their sons' works. The book thus is more literary analysis than character analysis, and I was looking for the latter. These three fathers got very gentle treatment from Toibin. I gave the performance three stars only because I enjoy listening to his voice, but I would not recommend this book, except to someone who is looking for the aforesaid literary analysis.

The Testament of Mary

Historia
Meryl Streep’s performance of Colm Tóibín's acclaimed portrait of Mary is hailed by the New York Times Book Review as “an ideal audiobook,” presenting the three-time Academy Award-winner in “yet another great role.” Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary presents Mary as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianity. In the ancient town of Ephesus, Mary lives alone, years after her son's crucifixion. She has no interest in collaborating with the authors of the Gospel. They are her keepers, providing her with food and shelter and visiting her regularly. She does not agree that her son is the Son of God; nor that his death was "worth it"; nor that the "group of misfits he gathered around him, men who could not look a woman in the eye," were holy disciples. This woman who we know from centuries of paintings and scripture as the docile, loving, silent, long-suffering, obedient, worshipful mother of Christ becomes a tragic heroine with the relentless eloquence of Electra or Medea or Antigone, in a portrait so vivid and convincing that our image of Mary will be forever transformed.

Just amazing insights in this book
Revisado: 08-06-18
The writing of this book, Mary's view of how things happened in the incidents surrounding the increasing celebrity of her son and his ultimate death, is filled with insights of what it is to be an old woman with a child whom she has watched and loved over the years, as well as insights about how the stories in the New Testament came to be. I had to look back to convince myself that this, indeed was written by a man.
And the reading by Meryl Streep is nothing short of award-winning level.

Bias becomes way too obvious
Revisado: 03-05-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I was really enjoying this course until the chapter on Christian burial, which the lecturer turns into a sermon to sell Christianity. I was really disappointed because the courses from The Great Courses have been better than that.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Not this course
What character would you cut from Death, Dying, and the Afterlife: Lessons from World Cultures?
the Christianity bias

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Lake Wobegon is in a frenzy of preparations for the Fourth of July. The town is dizzy with anticipation - until they hear of Clint's ambition to run for Congress. They know about his episodes with vodka sours, his rocky marriage, and his friendship with the 24-year-old who dresses up as the Statue of Liberty for the parade and may be buck naked beneath her robes. In Keillor's words, "It is Lake Wobegon as you imagined it - good loving people who drive each other crazy."

Details of day to day life spot on
Revisado: 04-29-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Liberty to be better than the print version?
Yes because Keillor reads his work so very well.
What other book might you compare Liberty to and why?
I'll pick an unusual one, Ladies of the Club, for its similar attention to the fine details of human existence and interaction. However, unlike Ladies (which I love), Keillor goes after all the humor embedded in humanity. This was a laugh out loud listen.
Which character – as performed by Garrison Keillor – was your favorite?
Hard to pick, but maybe Art, an irascible, insane actually, old codger.
Who was the most memorable character of Liberty and why?
Again, Art, or maybe Irene, the wife of the main character, who doesn't have a lot of speaking lines but whose essence is pivotal to the whole story.
