Pompeii has a more vast history than I realized. school just taught us it was a lively city destroyed without warning by a volcano. Oh, the poor people! It was indeed much more. I enjoyed learning of the people groups that inhabited it over time, especially the Etruscans which little is left of for their mark on history in general.

My favorite part was on the bustling daily life, including the hoodlum behaviors. Their society didn't seem much different than ours, complete with drunks and graffiti (that made me laugh), "fast food" and all things meat. I was surprised at what all meat types they did eat.

Hearing such detailed events that led up to the city's demise was interesting. How they did and didn't flee, the intense heat that is almost hard to comprehend.... Pretty mind blowing events. I can only imagine the sights people saw and felt from afar. It is neat how letters survived to tell their tale.

Narration was well done. Very enjoyable to listen to.

Previously I knew some about the Medici Family, mainly their dealings in art/artists of the times. Captivating History definitely delivers a thorough look into their lives from beginning to end, being influential in politics, the arts, religion, etc. What they touched, they did fully with determination. I enjoy the modern events that will be mentioned in brief just to see how the effect of Medici's influence can be felt even today. Captivating History books are certainly packed with info. At times I relisten to portions to make sure I grasp connections because while so much ground is covered the delivery can be a bit choppy to my brain. I feel the time relistening is worthwhile as the info presented is fascinating, just not always smooth. Overall this was an enjoyable audiobook.

This audiobook is well done and thorough. I knew these games were gross and devalued life for sport, but the extent was greater than I ever imagined. To learn more of the religious persecution, pitting animals against humans as well as animals on animals (how in the world did they obtain all these), their theater twist, roles of women, and even the games being a venue for romance was just too much for words. Listen and be engrossed. How the Romans embraced law and order, and are infamously known for well built roads, yet succumbed to this grotesque entertainment leaves one speechless. The games as a "public religion" really presses on the impact of them to everyone. It seems no one was unaffected. I enjoyed learning more of these games through this book.

I really enjoyed this history of Greece. So much ground is covered, from ancient thru modern times. I like how they include blips of modern day events as examples or comparisons to something that happened in Greece's history. The narrator is pleasant to listen to. His inflection pulls you in, like you are having a great conversation.

Jam packed with rich and interesting details!

This volume covers a lot of ground. The names, renaming, etc, takes some focus to digest as so much is presented in such a short listen. As the Egyptians became more aware of those outside their own, furthered their kingdoms, and conquered other cultures, they certainly saw the need to puff up their standing among them. I can imagine it was quite a huge task to attempt to erase a preceding ruler/Pharaoh from existence during a new ruler's/Pharaoh's reign. If I were a worker/slave then, I'd feel my tasks were meaningless...all that work and building only to have the next Pharaoh damage/destroy it. I can see why it's not easy for historians, either, deciphering and piecing back together all the brokenness. For all their destruction, the Egyptians certainly liked details. That's very evident in their continual renaming of themselves be it to incorporate the names of family, gods, locations, and roles. It gives me a feeling that despite their numerous gods, they were narrow minded to an extent. Perhaps that's why they felt brains were useless and generally weren't included in the organs they preserved during mummification. It's interesting the roles women played, yet the recognition in their records was minimal except for a very select few. The power those held is impressive.

This is chock full of information. I do wish it had a little bit more of a story feel so one could grasp and think more on what's presented before jumping into the next Pharaoh/dynasty.

Overall I learned a lot, had my mind rekindled on some previous knowledge, and feel I need another listen because it includes so much!

I much liked hearing of the culture and artifacts of the Middle Kingdom. I can see why many think Egypt's history starts here, and it gives more insight into the people vs mostly pyramid info being representative of the Old Kingdom.

Their idols and things of burial practice may have shrunk in size over time, but they certainly became more widespread and vast as I understand it. I'd like to have hear more info comparing the findings shared here with what's revealed in scripture. The practice of negative confessions brought to mind the sacrifices one would make in the Tabernacle for the possible offenses one may have unknowingly commited.

What brought on the change between Old and Middle Kingdoms from having many buried alongside you to those now being in separate areas?

This was an enjoyable listen.

Interesting info!

This audiobook has a fair share of info on the pyramids and structures built prior to the more well known ones we typically find in history school texts/lessons. I am still baffled as to the how that they even constructed these massive structures. Ah, The Sphinx...such mystery!

I especially liked the chapter on The Workers, and those after that. Info on their diet, physique, and healthcare is neat. Dwarfs? I'd not heard about their presence before. It's almost as if they were used for entertainment. Thoughts of court jesters and circuses popped into my head first when hearing about them.

Overall, quite interesting info is presented. I already would like to listen again as its coverage is quite extensive for just a 1.5 hour listen. Well done.

This audiobook gives great insight into the back stories of those lives surrounding the journey of the Separatists, and others, on the Mayflower. From it's beginning to it's end, my mind would compare their culture to that of current day. I could feel their longing for the freedoms they sought after. I felt their agony when disappointment and/or tragedy struck. The book offered relatable material to help grasp the gravity of events, such as equating the writing and distribution of religious papers to be such a crime then as heroine and cocaine are today. That just puts new depth to the impact upon those being persecuted for wanting to follow their faith and not that of the King. One thing I felt was revealed more in this book that other histories I have read is the feelings the Separatists had towards those they deemed as outsiders on the Mayflower. I mainly knew that Pilgrims wanted a new home. I never realized that the majority on the Mayflower were not there for religious freedom. The Separatists did not view them favorably, and it's interesting to see how they grouped themselves from them by making sure they were deemed as "Saints" and the rest "Strangers." To be cramped on a vessel that long with those feelings, and to never come together and join forces for what they were like minded on, I found interesting. It rose feelings in me that the Separatists felt threatened on some level that the freedom they were ultimately after may be in jeopardy. They didn't seem to reach out and grow their cause any. Did they not see what they were doing was akin to how they felt from others back in England? In the end, the good of love did prevail in them caring for those sick and that brought something in to soothe the soul.

Unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures. That certainly strikes a vibe today. Those involved on the Mayflower were able to see through uncertainty, collect their thoughts, and strike up a new form of government that would cover their bases. Today we forget to look back on such things at The Mayflower Compact and pause on them. There's much meat to digest, and many lessons to be learned, if history is heeded to instead of being erased.

Details on the ships themselves was fascinating. I knew all about the Speedwell and return visits causing delays to the initial journey. What I didn't know were the extra details on the Mayflower itself and what impacted it's strength for the voyage it was undertaking. I shall leave specifics out here as not to spoil it for the listener. I did chuckle a bit at the quite handy tool that happened to be on board to save the day. I resonated with that because my family is quite the hobbyists and we enjoy the right tool for the right job and have plenty of tools handy. I could relate to that person who tucked that device away in their belongings!

The narration was nice. I do feel in the beginning the back stories were a bit choppy. Receiving so much info on that many people called for a more intent listen. It didn't flow as smoothly as the rest of the story. If I had a book in hand I would have been able to slow down and process those connections better.

Overall this was an enjoyable listen with nice insight into the many lives and cultures that were impacted by this journey.
