This book was O.K. but nothing spectacular. The story was slow and kind of boring for most of the book till the end. It felt like the author was trying to push an agenda—gender neutral pronouns, seemed like everyone was gay or bisexual. I felt like this was a gender studies textbook wrapped up inside a relatively slow and boring novel. With so many other sci-fi books out there to read, I won’t be reading the rest of the series.

This book is nothing but a fluffy, new age motivational speech and hypnosis session. This lasts for about 20 minutes and basically repeats the same thing over and over. And then the rest of the book is just meditation/hypnosis music. There is absolutely NO Spanish spoken whatsoever in this book at all. It is absolutely pointless. If I could give a book zero stars, I would give it to this book.

I've read the whole series and let me say first that I really enjoyed it. I think CJF does a good job in inflection and voices, but I cannot believe how many relatively common words he mispronounces. Toward the end of this book, Bill makes a comment about "spelunking down caverns", or something like that, but CJF said spledunking. At this point in the series, it just added to the humor of the book. But really, as far as pronunciation goes, he is by far the worst narrator I have ever heard. This is offset by the fact that he is an excellent narrator as far as voice-acting. I will also say that the editing quality of this book is far superior than its predecessors. All in all, a truly enjoyable read.

Amazing Story, Problems with Narration

The story itself is awesome. I have been looking for more stories similar to the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher and the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne, and this series fits right in. I found there to be times where I was cracking up out loud, and times I totally felt sorry for Bill (usually while I was cracking up at the same time). I like that this story was written by a guy and it really comes across the way a guy thinks. While I would call it urban fantasy, it is nothing like the soap opera urban fantasies like the Twilight series or the Mortal Instruments series. It is pretty much straight action all the way through. I rate the story a five out of five.

However, the Narration is where I ran into trouble with this book. Let me start by saying that I wouldn't let the issues I have hold you back from buying this book. The inflection, character voices, and cadence of Christopher John Fetherolf were all great. He kept the story going and definitely made it interesting. However, as other reviewers have stated, the narrator consistently mispronounced simple words like "voila" by saying "viola" (like the instrument). He did this with many other common words as well. While it was very distracting--I'm thinking "Did he just mispronounce another word?" meanwhile losing track of the story-- it certainly wasn't the end of the world. What's inexcusable though, is that the editing on this audio book is absolutely the poorest job I've ever heard on an any audio book I've heard (and I've heard hundreds). Almost every chapter there were sections where the narrator would start reading and then the recording would stop and then repeat the last few sentences. Whoever edited this book obviously didn't take the time to listen through their work, nor did they take any pride in their job at all. I feel bad for Rick Gualtieri because the story is excellent.

With that all said, I will be getting the next books in the series and will certainly be checking out the author's other books as well. I'm just hoping that the editing and pronunciation issues are addressed in the future books.
