How to Walk with God in Exile

By the 2nd Chapter I was thoroughly engaged. The format is unique, switching between a modern day professor and student dialogue and a dramatization of the story of Daniel.

If you are looking for insight into Daniel's world and a firmer grasp of what he would have experienced at that critical juncture of Israel's history this will go far beyond your expectations.

If you are looking mainly to be entertained you will be disappointed. Like many reviewers I was underwhelmed by the narration, but the strength of the material itself, the knowledge I gained about Israel's history, culture and daily life of the time, and the connection I made to the source material so outweighed the entertainment value it was not even a contest.

If you are looking to deepen your faith and to imitate and develop Daniel's convictions and walk with God you will find a thorough explanation of how those convictions could be built and the preparation he was privy to that informed them.

Alma Cuervo did a fantastic job as narrator. Her steady tone was a big part of my interest never flagging. Ferrer definitely deserved all the accolades she has received for this book. Cuba's role in fighting apartheid, at great risk to herself, was a highlight. I am especially grateful for the introduction to the art of Teodoro Ramos Blanco. Familiar with the bust of Jose Marti in downtown Baltimore, but not the artist, I now know of so much more of his wonderfully expressive work. Ferrer's focus on Afro-Cuban history, the impact of Cuban radio, the ups and downs of the Cuban people and their complex relationship with the Castros and the world, and especially their special connection with the U.S., is a worthy read, important research and a significant addition to the historical record from an insider's view.

Long-time listeners of National Public Radio will feel right at home with veteran host Inskeep's tale of the partnership of adventurer, soldier and presidential candidate John C. Frémont and his modern politico wife Jesse and how they helped create the U.S.A.'s West Coast, blazing a trail where there literally was none. There are a few harrowing scenes in the wilderness which are juxtaposed with the no less harrowing ordeals of birthing a child alone, enduring months of not knowing the fate of your spouse and living with being left alone by choice. There are many familiar characters in this tale, but we see them from unfamiliar viewpoints. Thomas Hart Benton, Frederick Douglass and Samuel Morse are integral to the story. Horace Greeley and Henry Clay get honorable mention, but it is Jesse's private audience with Lincoln that provides the line many readers may remember most. If not for a few decisions we would all be familiar with this story.
