The narration was distracting
Revisado: 09-11-24
The book itself was only ok. It wasn’t anything special, it’s forgettable. What did stand out was how horrible the narration was. It was over dramatic in the extreme and the voices for different characters were so bad it was almost comical.

It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great
Revisado: 05-14-24
The thing that stands out most about this audio book is how incredibly bad the narrator is at accents. There are some characters with what are supposed to be English accents but I don’t know that I have ever heard an accent quite like what this narrator does.
The story is ok. There is a lot going on, a lot of unnecessary nonsense and it’s not even a little bit believable- but it was sort of entertaining.
All in all, it’s not worth the price. There are better books you could spend the money on.

Not her best work, but still entertaining. Narration is not great
Revisado: 03-01-24
The story itself was ok. This is not my favorite book by this author. However, it’s worth a read.
The narration is really irritating. When the narrator is reading the part of the older characters she slows the speech down so much it sounds like she is speaking in slow motion. It’s annoying and distracting. It’s also somewhat insulting to older people, she makes them sound like they are not very bright
She does the voice of a couple of the older lady characters in a way that reminds me of nails on a chalk board.
I would recommend reading this instead of listening to it. If this is the first book you read by this author- don’t give up on her. She has others that are better.

Historia
Nobody has a “normal” family, but Vesper Wright’s is truly...something else. Vesper left home at eighteen and never looked back—mostly because she was told that leaving the staunchly religious community she grew up in meant she couldn’t return. But then an envelope arrives on her doorstep.

It’s disturbing to the point of not being able to finish.
Revisado: 12-14-23
The premise is a good one, I think. The title description certainly pulled me in and made me want to purchase this. However, the story itself - the writing and the conversations between characters lacked depth. The characters were very stereotypical and shallow. The villain was your typical story book villain. She talked like it, she dressed like it, there was no nuance.
Warning- spoilers.
The religious group these individuals are in is a satanic cult. Ok- that sounds interesting, right? But it’s not. They are just normal every day people doing normal every day thing with a ‘ hail Satan’ thrown in. Except the casual portrayal of Satanism is disturbing in the extreme. I tried to get past it, I tried not to be superstitious or whatever, but I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t keep reading/ listening.
I’m a huge fan of horror, movies, stories and novels. I’m a huge fan of Stephen King. This was done with so little regard to the subject it’s upsetting.
Perhaps if another author had attempted this story it would have been better. The idea was a good one, the execution stunk.

It was completely not believable
Revisado: 11-27-23
This book was pretty much terrible. The narrators were fine, but the story itself was lame. The plot was weak. The characters were weak. The ending was weak. The whole thing pretty much stunk from beginning to end.

Historia
Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard. But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees.

This book is dark. Really, really dark
Revisado: 09-01-23
This is a solid book, but be prepared. It can be very disturbing and it takes quite a bit to disturb me. I have read so many other dark and intense books that I had become sort of jaded so for this to jar me the way it did is saying something.

But it’s not easy. She deserted them all—and her high school sweetheart—five years before with little explanation, and they've got questions. Sunday is determined to rebuild her life back on the east coast, even if it does mean tiptoeing around resentful brothers and an ex-fiancé. The longer she stays, however, the more she realizes they need her just as much as she needs them.

Mediocre at best
Revisado: 08-25-23
The story wasn’t terribly engaging. It was ok, but nothing more.
The narration was also mediocre at the best of times and downright distractingly bad when the narrator attempted an Irish brogue. Like nails on a chalkboard at those times. It would be worth listening to if it were a free listen, but it’s not worth a credit.

This was painful to listen to
Revisado: 07-08-23
I wanted to give this book a chance. I wanted to like it. I tried, I really did. I was hopeful it would get better. It didn’t. It started out bad and got worse. It’s absolute, unrealistic fluff. The narration is also distractingly poor. The narrator’s voice is adorable, but not at all suitable for this kind of book. Perhaps for a children’s book. And it is read as though someone is reading a children’s book to you. It’s over - acted. Overall, skip it. There are better ways to spend your time.

Wow. This was great and so was the narrator
Revisado: 06-15-22
The book itself was well and uniquely written. It kept me totally engrossed until the end and well into the acknowledgments. However, the narrator stole the show. She really manages to make each character stand out as an individual so you didn’t doubt who was speaking without over- doing it or getting annoying, which, I would imagine, is easy to do and hard to avoid. Well, she more than managed it.
The story is excellent, the characters are interesting and the writing style is very unique. Well done.
