Historia
The Slabaugh family are model Amish farmers, prosperous and hardworking, with four children and a happy extended family. When the parents and an uncle are found dead in their barn, it appears to be a gruesome accident: methane gas asphyxiation caused by a poorly ventilated cesspit. But in the course of a routine autopsy, the coroner discovers that one of the victims suffered a head wound before death—clearly, foul play was involved. But who would want to make orphans of the Slabaughs' children? And is this murder somehow related to a recent string of shocking hate crimes against the Amish?

Just when you think the previous novel in this storyline couldn’t get any better…
Revisado: 10-13-23
I LOVE this series by Linda Castillo (and narrated by the wonderful Kathleen McInerney). I kept thinking I would take a break after 3rd novel (which I sometimes like to do) but not with this series. The main character is a strong woman who had a complicated childhood, which made her what she is today. The thread of romance is skillfully woven into the storyline but isn’t gratuitous at all. And the story itself is a suspenseful and realistic. I can’t wait to listen to the next volume in this series!

Historia
In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and "English" residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But 16 years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish. Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. She's certain she's come to terms with her past - until the first body is discovered in a snowy field.

I read two of the novels in this series before this first one and couldn’t put them down. The first one was the same. Suspenseful, riveting, exciting, interesting, nice romance but not overly gratuitous - can’t wait to read novel 2.

Must Read to Believe…
Revisado: 05-10-23
how good this story is. I read the 4 novels that were written in sequence before this one and was just as delighted with ACOSF as I was with the previous ones. The narrator of the first four was amazing and I was disappointed at first that a different person would take on this role, but after a few chapters I stopped noticing the difference and believe she is as top-notch as the first one. I’m sad that this is the last of this series (I could be wrong) but will look into the author’s other series.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Recollections may vary…
Revisado: 01-17-23
Where do I start? From my own experience, recollections vary a great deal. My siblings and I are in our 60’s and having sat down together recently, reminiscing, relating our own experiences of growing up together, it turns out we each have a different recollection/reality of what transpired. It’s amazing how my reality differs from my siblings and vice versa. We have agreed to disagree mainly because of our deep love for one another and have no desire to entertain family squabbles at this point in our lives.
I, like the rest of the planet, have always been interested in Prince Harry and Prince William mainly because of the loss of their mother at such young an age and how that tremendous loss affected them. And, I’d always admired both brothers as they grew up to be fine young men. Harry, particularly seemed so jovial and in love with life. Little did everyone know what he was really going through (what both brothers went through).
The past couple of years I’ve been reading articles about Prince Harry and his wife Meghan and have been turned off by the constant whining and complaining (enough already!) and didn’t plan on listening to his audio book. But when I read that he narrated the book I changed my mind. And I’m glad I did. It is an engaging, sometimes humorous, sometimes incredibly painful raw account of his life as a Royal. It sometimes delves into what is probably considered extremely intrusive accounts of situations with his father and brother, but gives the public a rare glimpse into what his family is really like. I admit, there were times I winced at some of the revelations and couldn’t fathom how I would feel if I were in his family’s shoes, but yet one could still hear the ring of truth in his voice. That was HIS reality, HIS recollection of events.
At the end of the day, his story reveals to the reader how his family, to a certain extent, is just like any other family, with grievances, petty jealousies, competitiveness, etc. And yet, I also came away with a feeling of incredible deep love they have for each other and are just trying to get it right like the rest of us.
I’m glad Meghan came into his life when she did; she saved him. And as much as it hurt for Prince Harry to move his family back across the pond, it is better for him to be away from the shadow of his brother and father and be his own man. A truly remarkable story - I’m glad I listened.

Historia
Jamie Fiore Higgins became one of the few women at the highest ranks of Goldman Sachs. Spurred on by the obligation she felt to her working-class immigrant family, she rose through the ranks and saw it all: out-of-control, lavish parties flowing with never-ending drinks; affairs flouted in the office; rampant drug use; and most pervasively, a discriminatory culture that seemed designed to hold back the few women and people of color employed at the company.

I gave it 5 stars and really enjoyed this book. It is an honest and courageous tale of how the author made it to the top ranks of one of the most prestigious financial consulting firms in the world. She takes you through the highs and lows of her career and how she coped with the good ole boys network at the top.

One of the best that I’ve listened to in a while!!
Revisado: 10-15-22
Although I started this book several times I could not get into it, mainly because of the accents I think. I even tried to return it but could not. After a few weeks, I reread some of the reviews and decided to give it one last try and I’m so glad I did! It is so well-written that, as you get to the end of the story, you realize how well the common theme of the book weaves in and out of the novel right through the end so that all loose threads are tied up nicely. Beautifully done. I became so engrossed in the characters and their very different personalities. I loved them all and I’m looking forward to listening to other audio books by this author.

Revisado: 01-05-20
An almost 5 star rating from over 13,000 reviews, I really thought I was going to love this book (as I love all the the Stephen King novels I've read so far) but this one fell a little flat for me. The story-line started out well enough and the characters were wonderful, but it really started dragging towards the end of the book and I felt like there were several chapters too many.
