Down-to-earth experience with mindfulness
Revisado: 03-22-15
Would you listen to 10% Happier again? Why?
Yes. Already have :)
What did you like best about this story?
Harris comes through strongly in his reading. It's his story, and wile I think the vocabulary gets a little overdone in parts, you can really feel his emotion, sincerity, and investment in the narration. It's his story and he tells it as such.
Which scene was your favorite?
His description of his retreat experience.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I could, yes.
Any additional comments?
I came across this after a video I watched on Big Think. It led me to other books on mindfulness that I'm enjoying. I was hoping that this book would offer more everyday practices on mindfulness to help the reader. Regardless, a very enjoyable read.

Buddhism+mindfulness+psychotherapy.
Revisado: 03-22-15
Where does Thoughts Without a Thinker rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
3rd.
Have you listened to any of Mark Epstein’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No.
Any additional comments?
He goes deep into Buddhism and how it relates to his current psychotherapy practice and how it can help other psychotherapists with their patients, but also includes a lot of information that's applicable to the every day reader. I thought the connections to Buddhism were quite strong, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that. Overall an enjoyable read.

Good foundation for mindfulness
Revisado: 03-22-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Kabat-Zinn is the grandfather of the mindfulness movement. While this is a little heavy on theory and light on practice, I still found it helpful to know more about mindfulness.
What does Jon Kabat-Zinn bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The fact that he basically started the mindfulness movement in the West.
What did you learn from Wherever You Go There You Are that you would use in your daily life?
A couple of meditation practices.
Any additional comments?
Some reviewers have commented on the music. Annoying? Yes. 30 years ago? Yes. But I didn't find that it detracted from the message or book significantly. It did get a little loud between chapters, and lasted a little too long (though quieter), but I could always understand him.
And I disagree that a narrator should have been hired. Kabat-Zinn has a soft, quiet voice, but I found that it added sincerity to the message considering his pedigree with the movement.

Historia
Most of us believe when we're depressed that our situation is hopeless. That's a mistake, Dr. Elisha Goldstein reassures us in Uncovering Happiness. The secret to overcoming depression and uncovering happiness is in harnessing our brain's own natural antidepressant power and ultimately creating a more resilient antidepressant brain.

Great book, but focused on depression.
Revisado: 03-22-15
Would you listen to Uncovering Happiness again? Why?
Yes. If I found myself significantly depressed for an extended time, I think this would be very helpful. And perhaps again. There are many tools in this book that can be used by all.
Any additional comments?
This book is very good, but I was looking for something a little more mainstream, meaning something for people not constantly in the throes of depression. This book leaned too heavily on being depressed for what I was looking for. However, it's still a fantastic book and would highly recommend it.

Historia
Ever noticed that trying to calm down often produces more agitation? Or that real fulfillment can be elusive, despite living a successful life? Often, such difficulties stem from the human brain's hardwired tendency to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Modern science demonstrates that this survival mechanism served the needs of our earliest ancestors, but is at the root of many problems that we face today, such as depression, compulsive and addictive behaviors, chronic pain, and stress and anxiety.
