Historia
Danzig is a gripping historical novel in the grand tradition. It has generated rave reviews for its authenticity and its realistic portrayal of high pressure diplomatic clashes between Hitler and Western nations in the 1930s. The story encompasses fast-paced events in Geneva, Berlin, Warsaw, and London, as well as Danzig itself, capturing the drama of unfolding crisis that engulfed Europe on what we now know was the path to war.

Narrator very clumsy with pronunciation
Revisado: 12-21-20
I'm writing this when about half way through the book. That's because the narrator is driving me nuts. He does well at providing different voices for the characters and he speaks clearly. His pronunciation of names, place names and words in Polish and German is maddeningly poor. The only accent he gets right is Commissioner Lester's Irish accent. He makes the Polish Ambassador, Papee sound like he's French. He makes a stab at German accents with limited success. He needs to talk with a native Pole and German and get a handle on how they actually speak.
Most frustrating is Polish pronunciation. As one who has a command of Polish, it sets my teeth on edge. When a Polish name comes up, the narrator sounds like an Ellis Island official murdering an immigrant's name. Should another edition of this audiobook be done, PLEASE find a reader who knows enough Polish - and German - to get it right. It will add richness to the narration.

Historia
The German invasion of Poland on 1 September, 1939, designated as Fall Weiss (Case White), was the event that sparked the outbreak of World War II in Europe. The campaign has widely been described as a textbook example of Blitzkrieg, but it was actually a fairly conventional campaign as the Wehrmacht was still learning how to use its new Panzers and dive-bombers. The Polish military is often misrepresented as hopelessly obsolete and outclassed by the Wehrmacht, yet in fact it was well-equipped with modern weapons and armor.

Reader's pronunciation made me crazy
Revisado: 09-20-20
This is an excellent, detailed and, apparently, meticulously researched work. The narrator has good voice and reads well. It would have enhanced the performance if he had someone to teach him proper pronunciation of Polish names and words. As a Polish speaker, I found myself occasionally correcting out loud his mispronunciations. In most cases, I could still understand the word or name, but in other instances I was unable to quite make out the name of a person or place, leading to uncertainty to what he was referring.
I certainly understand that Polish can be confusing and intimidating to pronounce. The narrator made a noble effort. He could have used some coaching.

More sex than story
Revisado: 06-10-19
I had hopes for this book. The premise is basically good but it turned out to be, well, tedious. To be fair, I didn't finish it. I returned it after getting about half way through. At that point, I should have been thoroughly hooked. Instead, by that time I was just rolling my eyes at yet another bout of sex. If one is a fan of the soft-core porn historical romances, it's right up your alley. I'm certainly not a prude, but another sex scene every few pages just got old.
Characters were sketchy, descriptions and prose in general were quotidian. The main characters never seemed to develop a sense of urgency about their situation other than when they'd next have sex - which was never more than a couple pages away. Plot structure seemed overly simplistic, never establishing a thread that kept my interest. It just failed to deliver.

Fun book. Could have had a better reader.
Revisado: 06-13-16
Where does The Rules of Supervillainy rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Fun. Not in my top ten, though
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character
Did Jeffrey Kafer do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
No. That was the only thing disappointing about the book. It was often confusing knowing who was who. He was almost incapable of differentiating male and female characters. he was also unable to do any kind of a Spanish accent for the Diablo character.
If you could rename The Rules of Supervillainy, what would you call it?
N/A
