ANOTHER GREAT BOOK SPOILED BY THE NARRATOR

I have read and enjoyed this book a number of times and was thrilled to think I could now listen to it. But then I did, and had to put up with Mr. Smith's peculiar word by word reading--like a school child just learning to read. Why oh why didn't the author read it himself, since the two prefaces that he did read are so superior in narration.

I had not expected this book to be so fine--so funny, so charming, so real, so human. Plus, I generally avoid books read by the author. Except for memoirs, I find authors are rarely the best narrators. However, David Duchovny's narration is perfect--perfect voice, perfect monotone. I bought this book a long time ago--got a good deal--but only recently actually listened to it. What a great surprise!

SPOILED BY THE NARRATOR

I love this book. I have read it many many times, and, although the sample I heard wasn't as fine as I could have liked, I got the book anyway and thought, as with other audio books, that even with an iffy narrator, I could enjoy it. I was wrong. This narrator takes all the wit and charm right out of the book. Her choice of voices for the characters is truly unfortunate, and she seems so determined to maintain the accents, etc. of these various characters that she misses the point--certainly the humor--of the sentences they speak.

I wished I had known which stories were in this volume, so, assuming others might wish that, here are the titles--21 not 22:
The Open Window; The Story-Teller; Mrs. Packletide's Tiger; The Penance; Sredni Vashtar; Adrian; The Mappined Life; Reginald; The Chaplet; The Reticence of Lady Anne; The Unrest-Cure; The Phantom Luncheon; The Remoulding of Groby Lington; Gabriel-Ernest; Laura; Clovis on Parental Responsibilities; The Feast of Nemesis; Reginald on Besetting Sins; Tea; The Lumber-Room; A Young Turkish Catastrophe.

I debated long and hard whether to buy this volume, not knowing the included titles, but since the sample started with The Unrest-Cure, I knew there was at least one of my favorites.

This story has nothing to do with Leaphorn or Chee or the Navajo Nation. The setting is the end of the Vietnam War, and each chapter is introduced with a legitimate headline as to the disposition of the "current" situation. I have listened to this recording several times, and even though I know what will happen, it is still thrilling. I rate a story by how much I care about the characters and what happens to them. These are wonderful characters. It is an exciting and wonderful story, and Erik Bergmann's narration is superb.
