Historia
For thousands of years, the prophet Moses was regarded as the sole author of the first five books of the Bible, known as the Pentateuch. According to tradition, Moses was divinely directed to write down foundational events in the history of the world: the creation of humans, the worldwide flood, the laws as they were handed down at Mt. Sinai, and the cycle of Israel’s enslavement and liberation from Egypt. However, these stories—and their frequent discrepancies—provoke questions.

ANOTHER GREAT BOOK SPOILED BY THE NARRATOR
Revisado: 01-13-25
I have read and enjoyed this book a number of times and was thrilled to think I could now listen to it. But then I did, and had to put up with Mr. Smith's peculiar word by word reading--like a school child just learning to read. Why oh why didn't the author read it himself, since the two prefaces that he did read are so superior in narration.

Historia
Ted Fullilove, aka Mr. Peanut, is not like other Ivy League grads. He shares an apartment with Goldberg, his beloved battery-operated fish, sleeps on a bed littered with yellow legal pads penned with what he hopes will be the next great American novel, and spends the waning malaise-filled days of the Carter administration at Yankee Stadium, waxing poetic while slinging peanuts to pay the rent.

SURPRISED
Revisado: 04-21-23
I had not expected this book to be so fine--so funny, so charming, so real, so human. Plus, I generally avoid books read by the author. Except for memoirs, I find authors are rarely the best narrators. However, David Duchovny's narration is perfect--perfect voice, perfect monotone. I bought this book a long time ago--got a good deal--but only recently actually listened to it. What a great surprise!

Historia
Cluny Brown refuses to know her place in society. Last week, she took herself to tea at the Ritz. Then she spent almost an entire day in bed eating oranges. So, to teach her discipline, her uncle, a plumber who has raised the orphaned girl since she was a baby, sends her into service as a parlor maid at one of England's stately manor houses. While everyone around her struggles to keep pace with a rapidly changing world, Cluny continues to be Cluny, transforming those around her with her infectious zest for life.

SPOILED BY THE NARRATOR
Revisado: 04-27-19
I love this book. I have read it many many times, and, although the sample I heard wasn't as fine as I could have liked, I got the book anyway and thought, as with other audio books, that even with an iffy narrator, I could enjoy it. I was wrong. This narrator takes all the wit and charm right out of the book. Her choice of voices for the characters is truly unfortunate, and she seems so determined to maintain the accents, etc. of these various characters that she misses the point--certainly the humor--of the sentences they speak.

The Best of Saki - Volume 1

Historia
The delicious, biting wit of Saki's short stories satirizing Edwardian high society are some of the funniest and most delightful exquisite literary miniatures. In this first volume, there are 22 glittering examples. Saki was the pen name of Hector Hugh Monro. He was born in Burma in 1870, where his father was a senior official in the Burma police. From the age of two, he lived with two maiden aunts and his grandmother in Devon and was educated in Exmouth and at the Bedford Grammar School.

21 stories as follows
Revisado: 02-25-19
I wished I had known which stories were in this volume, so, assuming others might wish that, here are the titles--21 not 22:
The Open Window; The Story-Teller; Mrs. Packletide's Tiger; The Penance; Sredni Vashtar; Adrian; The Mappined Life; Reginald; The Chaplet; The Reticence of Lady Anne; The Unrest-Cure; The Phantom Luncheon; The Remoulding of Groby Lington; Gabriel-Ernest; Laura; Clovis on Parental Responsibilities; The Feast of Nemesis; Reginald on Besetting Sins; Tea; The Lumber-Room; A Young Turkish Catastrophe.
I debated long and hard whether to buy this volume, not knowing the included titles, but since the sample started with The Unrest-Cure, I knew there was at least one of my favorites.

Historia
Until the telephone call came for him on April 12, 1975, the world of Moon Mathias had settled into a predictable routine. He knew who he was. He was the disappointing son of Victoria Mathias, the brother of the brilliant, recently dead Ricky Mathias and a man who could be counted on to solve small problems. But the telephone caller was an airport security officer, and the news he delivered handed Moon a problem as large as Southeast Asia. His mother, who should be in her Florida apartment, is fighting for her life in a Los Angeles hospital - stricken while en route to the Philippines to bring home a grandchild they hadn't known existed.

A different but still great Hillerman
Revisado: 06-03-18
This story has nothing to do with Leaphorn or Chee or the Navajo Nation. The setting is the end of the Vietnam War, and each chapter is introduced with a legitimate headline as to the disposition of the "current" situation. I have listened to this recording several times, and even though I know what will happen, it is still thrilling. I rate a story by how much I care about the characters and what happens to them. These are wonderful characters. It is an exciting and wonderful story, and Erik Bergmann's narration is superb.
