Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Great Read- balances story and details
Revisado: 01-06-25
This book teased me from my wish list all year before I finally bought it. Well worth the credit, incredible story and expertly researched. Went down many rabbit holes using Google maps to help me better understand the scope. TBH, although I read most of O'Brien's works in my younger days, I really never wanted to revisit them, so this book was a tough sell. I had to keep reminding myself it was all TRUE. An extraordinary story supremely well written.

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Decent light reading, well produced.

The plot device of intertwining the traditional mystery story with a true crime podcast, was well produced. Early on it elevates the story but quickly loses steam and then- in my opinion- strains credulity. I will stop there so as not to provide spoilers. If you listen to it as a pleasant escape, you will not be disappointed. However, I was hoping for a more nuanced/interesting narrative that the ethics and exploitation in the True Crime universe.

Tedious meanderings
Revisado: 12-19-24
Unfortunately, the author chose to make the book about herself, her family and cooking dinner. I would have preferred to hear more about the victims and killer. I am really trying my best to get through it, but it’s a slog. Been a member since 2012 and have only returned two books, this may make three. The narrator is also problematic, her tone is just a strange bored whisper that does not do the arterial any justice. Remember this is a first person account for the point of view of the detective so the voice just takes you out of the experience.

The last thing Reacher can recall is the car he hitched a ride in getting run off the road. The driver was killed. Reacher needs a cell phone..
Revisado: 11-11-24
Reacher books are comfort food. We know the good guys (Reacher) and the bad guys (practically everyone else...mostly men) and it is super comforting. He likes coffee, he travels light and somehow manages to stay in top physical condition by just walking around. (if only....). I am not going to lie, I watch him on TV and I buy each new release, but maybe, just maybe he could inch himself closer to the 21st century. How does he renew his license? :)

At least we are done with the Time Machine
Revisado: 11-11-24
Feels like Lincoln and Child have taken off down a path of pseudo-science with this time machine story. It was entertaining enough, glad I was able to suspend my belief and finish off the story, Not sure I will invest in another Pendergast story we they keep on this path.
The real highlight was Jefferson Mays, he was a delight. Although no one can take the place of the esteemed Rene Auberjonois, Jefferson Mays did justice to the characters and made a marginally disappointing story a pleasure.

Historia
In Dark Towers, award-winning journalist David Enrich reveals the truth about Deutsche Bank and its epic path of devastation. Tracing the bank's history back to its propping up of a default-prone American developer in the 1880s, helping the Nazis build Auschwitz, and wooing Eastern Bloc authoritarians, he shows how in the 1990s, via a succession of hard-charging executives, Deutsche made a fateful decision to pursue Wall Street riches, often at the expense of ethics and the law.

Well researched and written, held my interest.
Revisado: 11-11-24
Enrich does a solid job of connecting the dots weaving a solid pattern of a Bank who took advantage of the lax governance that is afforded to FOBs in the US. There were several occasions I wished he had taken off the gloves---- as many times he treaded too lightly on DB and the regulators. A must read for anyone interested the consequences of management stacking the deck in favor of revenue/growth at the expense of compliance and risk. Business case for why we need strong board and risk oversight, but the US outposts of foreign banks very much lack both.

Historia
When police in Florida's Volusia County were called to investigate the murder of Richard Mallory, whose gunshot-ridden body had been found in the woods just north of Daytona Beach in December 1989, their search led them to a string of dead ends before the trail went cold six months later. During the spring and summer of 1990, the bodies of six more middle-aged white men were discovered. The police soon discovered the killings were the work of a single culprit, Aileen Wuornos, one of the first women to ever fit the profile of a serial killer.

Not the best performance nor the best researched
Revisado: 05-29-23
Found this to be a shallow read that relied heavily on law enforcement transcripts and missed some of the issues with the case and investigation. Combine this with some weak narration choices and let’s just say I am glad it was included in my membership and I did not waste credits.

Interesting and fun read
Revisado: 09-13-20
Stewart is good narrator and a capable writer with a good story, Copeland provides the historical context necessary to give the story a sense of time and space. Could do without the dramatic vignettes but a annoyance in an otherwise good podcast.
