Historia
When Christine Platt set out on her journey to live with less, she never intended to become The Afrominimalist. She just wanted to tame the chaos in her closet! But after struggling with the austerity and whiteness of mainstream minimalism, Christine realized why minimalism often seems unattainable for so many: the emphasis on all-white, barren aesthetics distracts from the practice of living with intention. And so, she decided to do things her way by curating a life of less influenced by the African diaspora.

I can do it, too!
Revisado: 02-06-25
Her perspective on minimalism is refreshing; not everything has to be beige! I can cut my office clutter and wardrobe acquisitions in ways that work with me…and for me…and it doesn’t have to be done in an hour! I feel seen.

Historia
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

Captivating (pun intended)!
Revisado: 01-15-25
Facts & behind-the-scenes historical info mixed with present-day colloquialisms and a dash of humor make this listening experience an “audio page-turner.” Each step, each inch, takes A LOT to continue this 400 year old climb. Every scratch and every scrape counts—and each time the story is told (without redactions), a foothold forms and we move forward. Tell it! Excuse me, I’m going to listen to it again. — Highly recommended.

Historia
Filled with sharply drawn, emotionally powerful senses, Walk Through Fire traces the hardships Sheila faced in her marriage and her professional life. Despite her skills as a violinist and music teacher, as well as her obvious entrepreneurial talent, she had to fight to overcome self-doubt and fears of failure. Sheila vividly details her struggles, including battling institutional racism, losing a child, suffering emotional abuse in her thirty-three-year marriage, and plunging into a deep depression with her divorce. And yet, out of that pain came renewed purpose and meaning.

So THAT’S what happened!
Revisado: 01-11-25
I’ve admired Ms. Sheila from afar for years. I was aware of her connection to BET, but I didn’t know any of the details or heartache. Not only does it give a front row seat to her history and relationships; it also gave us a peek at business deals at the multi-million level. Quite the pseudo mentorship! — Thank you, Ma’am, for sharing your story with us!

What a story of SURVIVAL and raw insight to poverty
Revisado: 09-30-24
Such a NECESSARY revelation of poverty and the abuse, neglect and disregard left in its wake, and the very real, destructive and lasting effects on those in it. Hats off to putting words to the production and acting industry’s single dimensional interests and focus. That narrowness of vision and imagination is what makes many and most productions predictable and, well, BORING.

If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

In this smart and subversively funny memoir, Kristen Howerton navigates the emotional and sometimes messy waters of motherhood and challenges the idea that there’s a “right” way to raise kids. Recounting her successes, trials, mishaps, and hard-won wisdom, this mother of four advocates for letting go of the expectations, the guilt, and the endless race to be the perfect parent to the perfect child in the perfect family.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Big loser.
Revisado: 04-07-14
What disappointed you about The Goldfinch?
Lead character never rose above his shortcomings. He never excelled beyond the bad hand he was dealt at birth. He spent his life sabotaging his own decency and success. I needed a shower afterwards. It never got better. What a yucky world he created for himself. Make it stop!
Would you ever listen to anything by Donna Tartt again?
No.
Which character – as performed by David Pittu – was your favorite?
The furniture restorer.
What character would you cut from The Goldfinch?
Boris. For sure.
Any additional comments?
Next time, give us some light in the tunnel of darkness and less description of nothings. Too much nothing. Too much self-destruction. Too much time in Loser Town. It is unattractive (read: repulsive). It is boring. I couldn't wait to for it to end. Oh yes, the ending was wholly disappointing--an unimpressive fizzle.
