Historia
San Francisco, 1906. In a city bustling with newly minted millionaires and scheming upstarts, two very different women hope to change their fortunes: Gemma, a golden-haired, silver-voiced soprano whose career desperately needs rekindling, and Suling, a petite and resolute Chinatown embroideress who is determined to escape an arranged marriage. Their paths cross when they are drawn into the orbit of Henry Thornton, a charming railroad magnate whose extraordinary collection of Chinese antiques includes the fabled Phoenix Crown, a legendary relic of Beijing’s fallen Summer Palace.

I enjoyed this book very much. There were many characters, but they were so well defined. I didn’t get things mixed up. The story is obviously fiction, but it was written around true historical events.

Excellent Narration
Revisado: 02-28-25
I have read several books by this author and enjoyed them very much however, this was my least favorite. For whatever reason, I couldn’t get caught up in the story and to be honest, couldn’t wait to get to the end. I will continue to read the author’s books in the future, this was just not a good one for me.

Historia
Tara Beckley is a senior at idyllic Hammel College in Maine. As she drives to deliver a visiting professor to a conference, a horrific car accident kills the professor and leaves Tara in a vegetative state. At least, so her doctors think. In fact, she's a prisoner of locked-in syndrome: fully alert but unable to move a muscle. Trapped in her body, she learns that someone powerful wants her dead - but why? And what can she do, lying in a hospital bed, to stop them?

The story was original
Revisado: 01-19-25
The star rating confused me. 5 stars= I love this book, 4 stars=it’s great. I did love this book, but it is not great however, it is very good so I gave 4 stars anyway. I only give five stars to books such as Memoirs of a geisha.
I thought the story was very original, nothing I had read before like this, with the exception of a girl being in a coma. The characters had very interesting personas; hit man, race car driver, supportive sister, and a compassionate doctor, among some of them. I recommend giving this a listen, the story moves along at a good pace without a lot of blah blah blah.

The narrator destroyed this book
Revisado: 01-01-25
I attempted to return this book after hearing one chapter. Unfortunately, I could not therefore I finished it. Narrator had a monotone voice that did not differ between characters. Therefore, it was difficult to follow the story because I didn’t know who was talking. and I thought it convoluted.

Historia
Marshall Miller would’ve remembered her face even if he hadn’t seen it on a MISSING poster. When a young woman disappears in his small town, the investigation hinges on Marshall’s haunted sighting of her, crying in the back seat of a police car driven by a cop named Maddox. There’s only one problem: no local cop named Maddox exists. But the speeding ticket he handed to Marshall certainly does.

Revisado: 12-26-24
What I really liked about this book is that the story/concept was like nothing I had ever heard. Very original. I’m not normally a fan of young adult or make-believe genres, but this really took me by surprise. Kudos to the author and narrator.

I wouldn’t recommend
Revisado: 12-06-24
This is the first time I’ve ever read a book so low in all categories. Maybe it’s just me.
The plot is just inane. A super computer matches people up to be the perfect couples.
So much monotonous, long run, communication regarding databases and super computers and everything that they entail. Lines of code and programming read over and over. It’s like hearing someone reading Social Security numbers back to back 20 times in a row. My ears are bleeding.

Too many characters to keep track of
Revisado: 11-30-24
The reason I gave this three stars is because: three stars is pretty good and four stars means it’s great. This was not a great book, but still kept me interested. A bit over the top with regards to some of the characters, kinda like the life styles of the rich and famous. Somebody knew somebody that always had a private plane, helicopter or boat. Additionally, there was a lot of characters and I got lost trying to remember who was who. I completed the book, found out who the bad guy was in the end and don’t recall who he was within the story.

Historia
It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Couldn't connect
Revisado: 10-11-24
Have never been to Oz, but I still understood the story of the Wizard of Oz. However, in this case I could not, fathom anything about the code breaking work and or machines. However, The story played out well and it was heartbreaking to know that these peoples work could drive them to madness and or lose love because of their commitment to national security.

Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Good listen
Revisado: 10-04-24
I enjoyed this book very much. It’s a story set in the late 40s/early 50s about several women with unique histories and differences, finding themselves living in a boarding house for various reasons, during the McCarthy /Cold War/ Pillsbury Bake Off era. They all have different perspectives for their lives at this time due to their past and current living situations. The only reason I did not give this five stars is because the writer felt it necessary to quote verbatim, several cooking recipes.
