My chiefest problem with the performance is the cackling laughter. The actors deliver their lines with prolonged, annoying laughter. Now it’s true that Chekov intended his plays as comedies, but that doesn’t mean following each line with a prolonged obnoxious, incessant laughter! I increased the speed to 2.5x just to tolerate it, and it still seemed too goddamn long! I don’t want to sit there listening to actors laugh in between their lines like goddamn hyenas! These performers are full of themselves, too indulgent, take every opportunity to revel in their emotions, it’s sickening. What did Shakespeare day to his actors, “don’t get in the way of my words.” I’ve listened to the LATW performance, and this version is a full 30min longer! No doubt it’s on the account of the performance.

Listened to it the first time, didn’t like it.

Gave it another shot at 2X speed, loved it!

2X speed is the key for this one. Good luck

I finished the book, I highly recommend it. I was born in Samarkand. As a young kid, I passed Timur’s mausoleum daily on my way to school. I touched the black marble that houses his bones. As a young kid with a powerful imagination, many times I have felt an invisible hand grab me and pull me towards his grave. On one of those occasions while traveling in the company of my grandma, she noticed me trying not to stare at the solitary mausoleum. She inquisitively asked if I knew who was buried there. I couldn’t hide my intense interest, as she pointed to the giant statue in the middle of the city square to say “Him! Amir Timur.” Encouraged by my astonishment, she added “do you know the name of his youngest son?” As I shook my head “no,” she said “Shoxrux” and smiled at my confusion. My name is Shoxrux I thought, and with a five year olds imagination I struggled to work out “was I named for Shoxrux?” or “was I Shoxrux?” I thought possibly this body might be a reincarnation. At five years old I could grasp the concept of reincarnation but not the idea that there could be two people with the same name on the planet, and it amused my grandmother. I’m glad to have begun exploring Amir Timur’s and in turn my own origins.
