Historia
Daniel Rice is a government science investigator whose specialty is solving seemingly intractable problems through scientific inquiry. But Daniel's intellectual strength is sorely tested by the bizarre realities he finds in the quantum world. Extra dimensions of space trap the unwary, probability replaces cause and effect, and time isn't what anyone imagined. The other side of the mirror is a place full of dangers, but it's also somewhere a dedicated scientist can uncover secrets that connect humans with something greater.

Don’t listen to naysayers
Revisado: 03-16-25
I listened to this even after reading some of the criticism (because it was free to try on Plus) and I’m very glad I did. The science was very interesting, but I can understand why it may seem overkill for someone who doesn’t have a science background. Since I do have that background, it seemed in line with classic sci-fi writing styles with modern twists and interesting storylines. The science was just enough to make something like time travel interesting (I’ve always poo-pooed time travel stories). The author does his research and will admit when he is stretching the truth as it is known today. Hey… isn’t that what makes it science fiction? I recommend. If you can listen with Plus, you should at least start and see how far it takes you.

waste of time
Revisado: 02-22-21
The "story" had funny moments. It really seemed pointless. Bottom line is it commits the worst sin of entertainment. Overall it is a waste of precious time which could be spent doing something more productive, including anything which entertainment accomplishes for you.

Carolyn's not so different from the other human beings around her. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course - before the time she calls "adoption day", when she and a dozen other children found themselves being raised by a man they learned to call Father.

The top 1% can make a difference
Revisado: 02-04-20
I don't know what to say so it is obvious that this review is real. I don't write many reviews. I have 100's of Audio Books in my library. I have listened to 1/2-2/3 of them, mostly with casual interest and minimal impact. This book really defies the genres. It is classified as horror, but I did not find it horrific. There is a purpose for the gore in the development of the characters. In that development, personalities and relationships are explored in a thought-provoking manner. All of this accentuated against an extraordinary setting. All of it is stimulating. This book is the 1 out of 100 which matters to me. Fantastical.

Smartly Executed
Revisado: 11-20-19
My focus for audio books are Science Fiction and Science. But even a left-leaning brain needs some variety now and then. I was very pleasantly surprised by this intelligently constructed mystery in the spirit of Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys. Modern and relevant. I have spent time in New Orleans and found this to be fun and informative.

Historia
Does nature really make us feel better? The 3-Day Effect takes a look at the science behind why being in the wild can make us happier, healthier, and more creative. Whether it’s rafting down Utah’s Green River, hiking in Utah’s wilderness, or walking through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, scientists are finding that the more exposure humans have to nature, the more we can benefit from reduced anxiety, enhanced creativity, and overall well-being.

waste of time - high on fluff, low on substance
Revisado: 05-28-19
So... In a nutshell. I have a feeling that spending 3 days outdoors changes my perspective, but I want someone smarter and/or more educated than me to prove it. In the meantime, let me entertain you with a lot of outdoorsy sound effects. If you hear enough running water or birds chirping, you will get what I am trying to say.

Doesn't stand time test
Revisado: 01-26-19
I want to like this author because of all I have read about her. First couple of books leave me dry. Her style is somewhat like PKD, but without the ability to draw me in. This book was somewhat entertaining due to it's premise, but didn't develop well and had me wondering when it was going to get substantial. It did pose some interesting philosophical questions, but nothing that I haven't been hearing since my childhood in the 60's. Now the notions seem stale and dated. I watched the movie and it seemed to be exactly like my experience of the book. 80's B-movie.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Satisfying but could have been even better
Revisado: 09-22-18
This story had many elements which I enjoyed; mythology, ancient middle-eastern culture/mystique, forbidden love, the nature of love... I enjoyed it's fairytale style paired with adult themes. I found it a little slow to develop and not completely satisfying how it ended and specifically, how the story line of the (very well developed) characters ended up. If asked whether I would listen to this again, the answer is, "Yes. Absolutely." simply because I enjoyed the description of the characters and the nature of the story. I am not a big fan of book series, but this book leaves me wanting to see the sequel because many of the elements were so well developed but not followed through on.

Stranger in a Strange Land is the epic saga of an earthling, Valentine Michael Smith, born and educated on Mars, who arrives on our planet with “psi” powers—telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telekinesis, teleportation, pyrolysis, and the ability to take control of the minds of others—and complete innocence regarding the mores of man. After his tutelage under a surrogate father figure, Valentine begins his transformation into a kind of messiah.

Grok it as a Classic
Revisado: 09-22-18
I would echo the review titled “ We live in the world this book made ”, which captured my experience of this book. I want so much to like Heinlein because I was a child in the 1960s and his work sets the foundation and tone for so much Sci-Fi over the decades. However, while the concepts in this book may have blown peoples minds at the time it was published, it is primarily a treatise on racism, religion and society and the concepts illustrated in this story are old hat now. I will continue to plow through Heinlein stories for the nostalgia, but this was not the masterwork people made it out to be, even if it did have an impact on culture and peoples thinking then. In fact, it seemed even a bit trite and boring in spots. The narration was excellent, though, and I truly enjoyed the portrayal of the character Jubal Harshaw, which captivated my imagination. With all that said, this probably needs to be on a must-read list to help us understand the changes in our culture in the past 5-6 decades.

Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares.

Left me dry
Revisado: 09-22-18
I was expecting Sci-Fi, and it is really a mixture of Sci-fi Fantasy, which I don't particularly enjoy. The story had some interesting elements, but I spent most of the book wondering where it was headed. It was narrated with a very strong accent, which exacerbated my frustration with the story. I had to listen very carefully to follow and then was a bit disappointed, leaving me thinking it wasn't worth the effort.

Something called the “Blue Juice" is coming. For all of us. Luckily, me (Chip Collins), Pete, Nikola Tesla, Bobo, and FBI Agent Gina Phillips are here to kick its ass, and send it back to last Tuesday. Maybe. Or maybe we'll fail, and everyone in the multiverse is doomed. (Seriously, you might want to get that underground bunker ready.) Either way, I've got to get home to Julie and find out – woah, I'm not about to tell you that right here in the book description! TMI, dude.

Then you will like this. I'm not going to say these are great literature, but they sure as hell are entertaining. I enjoy the author's narration, too. The style of humor keeps me smiling throughout the book. The story is engaging carried largely by the development of interesting characters.
