Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Revisado: 03-07-24
Here we start to get a feeling for Jackson Lamb's gigantic chip. And in the telling, with an interesting construction, the sense of the immovable Security Service, its intrigue and its thwarted mission, unfolds. Much of the value of Herron stories is unveiled by the wonderful narration by Gerard Doyle who captures the characters with immense skill.

Subtle, nuanced and beyond many's abilities.

The narration is superb and it goes a long way to describes the shades, shadows and variations of British culture, society and perspectives around security and modern post 70s history. The ending is said by some to be disappointing which by the definition of the book, is exactly not what it is. Rather the ending symbolizes the whole story which a slice of a culture that has an uncertain beginning, no clear message and an inconclusive (everyone lives happily ever after or dies) ending. IMO, Herron is a true successor to Le Carre, just molded to a different set of conflicts.

Complex story, needs attention.
Revisado: 08-06-23
I really like his style, especially as it relates to the Slow Horses series. This like all has complex scene/story line changes which without the benefit of seeing paragraph, chapter or page changes means the reader can't daydream as when these occur the story loses its sense.
Audible should advise/manage narratives to limit the highs and lows of the narrator's voice as many audio systems cannot handle them in conjunction with the deteriorating hearing of the demographic that listens to this type of book.

Masterpiece

As a former South African which took the gap, I did not think I would enjoy the expose' of the socio economic conditions I left behind. But the, story, the narrator and his interpretations of the characters constant tension and the juxtaposition of the legal, enforcement and humanity of the South African state were fascinating.

Not for listening in a car
Revisado: 10-04-22
An expansive yarn that encompasses a world that no one living has had the chance to experience. But don't listen in a car, plane or anywhere there is background noise and no N/C earphones. The narrative is very realistic with many asides, mutters and introspection that gets lost.

Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

Herron is an acquired taste
Revisado: 04-13-22
But when you have it, it's hard to find anything as good. In the Le Care mold but with a droll sense of humor that tolls the English acceptance for the mediocre and non performer who nevertheless delivers. The new Slow Horses TV series will find this card to translate for US audiences but no doubt will be recognized by the remainder of the English speaking world.

Incredible
Revisado: 01-20-21
So many elements of the characters, story and ambience were close enough to the reality that I recalled in the 80s in SA that my skin crawled. The narration was brilliant (as they say in SA) with accents and intonation compelling. Dennis must be a one of "on mense" to have pulled it off so well. Thank you Mr. Bonnert for recalling a time of incredible uncertainty, fear and frustration without getting embroiled in the politics.
