Historia
Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

A wonderful story that manages a perfect synergy between eerie and cozy. Loved that this was my first read of the year.

From the Arthur C. Clarke award-winning author of Children of Time, this third and final novel in an extraordinary space opera trilogy depicts humanity on the brink of extinction—and reveals how one man's discovery will save or destroy us all. I loved this end to the trilogy! Didn’t slow down, and the focus on Ollie was wonderful.

Miss Marple in Space
Revisado: 09-15-23
The last thing I expected was a cozy mystery/adventure yarn in the transition of Agatha Christie but set in space, but here we are, and I LOVED every page! Don’t miss out. Different but similar to the other connected novels, this one was maybe a bit less bombastic but more comfortable. 8/8 fancy teacups

Historia
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

My favorite of his books
Revisado: 05-10-23
This was an incredible performance, and I think my favorite of all a Adrian Tchaikovsky’s books. It was self contained, yet sprawling. I was riveted through the whole book, and will carry the characters along with me for sometime yet.

Historia
Melanie has a destiny, though it isn’t the one everyone assumes it to be. She’s delicate; she’s fragile; she’s dying. Now, truly, is the winter of her soul. Harry doesn’t want to believe in destiny, because that means accepting the loss of the one person who gives his life meaning, who brings summer to his world.

Historia
After eighty years of fragile peace, the Architects are back, wreaking havoc as they consume entire planets. In the past, Originator artifacts—vestiges of a long-vanished civilization—could save a world from annihilation. This time, the Architects have discovered a way to circumvent these protective relics. Suddenly, no planet is safe. Facing impending extinction, the Human Colonies are in turmoil. While some believe a unified front is the only way to stop the Architects, others insist humanity should fight alone.

Wonderful sequel
Revisado: 11-01-22
Absolutely worth reading- a strong sequel that gave more of a voice to some of my favorites from the first book who originally didn’t feature as prominently. If you liked the first book this is just as, or even more satisfying. 10/10 space clams.

Historia
The world named Mount Lookitthat was never meant for humans - it was shrouded in lethal mists. Life existed only on one plateau, unreachable except from space. But the disastrous decision to colonize the planet could not be reversed. So the settlers survived somehow - under a ruthless dictatorship. Mount Lookitthat was rebellion-proof. Then fate dealt the colonists a wild card named Matthew Keller, who had a talent that neither he nor anybody else knew about. At last the colonists had a glimmer of hope!

Dated sexism made it hard to like this one
Revisado: 10-04-22
I usually do love the author AND I think for 1968 there were a lot of break out things going in with gender, but th casual and frequent nature of sexist worldviews just really pulled me out in a way that I don’t recall ringworld books doing. I think it’s a problem of degree; it’s totally fine to enjoy this book knowing these things! —I just personally found myself being pulled out of the story and don’t think it holds up to the authors other works.

Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Historia
In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

Don’t pass this up!
Revisado: 10-25-18
I first came to this book at a bad time, and couldn’t get into it. I am very grateful it came back to me some months later! I have really enjoyed the book and the performance. It is a wonderful and touching portrayal of one of my heroes of literary fiction. This book is a lot like having a good mug of coffee or tea in afternoon while sitting on the porch (in late summer). Its a feeling of general well-being has this book, and I don’t think my blustery October would have been quite so bearable without its quiet presence bubbling at the back of my thoughts. Do yourself a great favor and listen or read it.
