This review is going to be a bit spoilery, but not really in a plot specific way. If you read the description you should be fine.

I think I may have been gifted this book, but I honestly dont remember. If it was then despite it being given to me I leave this review honestly.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit and I will definitely be reading the next one, but the premise is a bit weird. I dont mean the LitRPG bit, I mean the fact that once our universe reaches some kind of intelligence quotient then we are automatically added into "The System" which is based on magic but formatted like an RPG? That's a very strange concept unless this is really some Matrix-esque system. I really dont know what to make of that for now and I anticipate the strangeness of it will be brought up in future books so I set aside that confusion for now.

Jake is a little one dimensional. There is some character growth, but not much. Some of the other characters have quite a bit more growth, though. Using both Jake and Jacob as character names when there are relatively few named characters in the series is downright dumb, in my opinion. Obviously people who know each other have same names all the time, but there is no reason to include it in a book like this, IMO.

Read this book if you like LitRPG.
Read this book if you like archers in movies and books.
Read this book is you like "lone hunter" type characters.

I received this book for free, but the review is left of my own accord.

This is a fun LitRPG book that isn't too gamey. Most of the 'leveling' and such is left out, but there is enough to let you know you're still in the genre.

The story is fun, though there are some bits that are a bit predictable. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. Good foreshadowing should lead to being able to foresee the coming events. My only real 'complaint' is that the major villain isn't well explained. I understand what it is, but there is no explanation for how it exists or where it came from. My hope is that if a fourth installment is done (there are enough threads hanging to warrant one, but enough closure in this book for it to not be needed) that there will be some exploration of that villain.

as always, Jack Voraces does a great job with voices. The sheer range in his voices continues to surprise me.

Read this if you enjoy military scifi.
Read this if you enjoy the Bobiverse series.
Read this if you like traditional fantasy monsters (dwarves, gnomes, orcs, etc) in your scifi.

I received this book for free, but the review is left of my won accord.

This is only my second LitRPG series and is my first Dungeon Core one, but so far I'm enjoying this style of scifi/fantasy story. The story itself is what is carrying us here, though, as there is relatively little so far in character development. The end of this book leaves it open so Slater could definitely experience some personal growth in the next installment, but there isnt much of it here.

I appreciate that, because of the story reasons, this installment is less game-ified than the previous book, though it does still codify some of Slater's abilities, which does make it easier to keep track of what all is going on. I just dont need to be reminded and have an entire lengthy character sheet read to me every time any little thing upgrades. So this was a nice change.

Jack Voraces continues to provide interesting voices as the narrator. Some of them are a little same-y, but I'm surprised at his range considering his normal reading voice seems a little gruff. Also, I appreciate the effort taken when the voice being used is supposed to to have been broadcast over a ship speaker.

Read this if you enjoy the military aspects of the Bobiverse books.
Read this if you like LitRPG books.
Read this if you like traditionally fantasy type creatures (elves, dwarves, orcs, etc) in a scifi setting.

Bobiverse as a LitRPG book

The setting reminds me very much of the Bobiverse books, which I love, though there are times in this book that I think the choice to do it as a LitRPG book instead of just a regular scifi/fantasy hold it back a bit. Seems like you could tell the exact same thing, just without the 'leveling up' aspect which seems out of place as, so far, the story doesnt seem to be placed in a video game.

This was my first 'Dungeon Core' book as well and I was concerned it was going to get boring hearing about random groups going in to fight against the same rooms worth of MOBS and traps over and over, but I should have had more faith. Henegar handles it all very well and the story flows nicely without getting bogged down in being repetitive.

Another aspect I like about this is that while there is one main POV character, they are in control of an ever-growing horde of other 'characters' so the characters abilities are tied more to their ability to be an effective leader instead of their ability to swing a sword or fire a gun.

As always, Jack Voraces does a great job with the narration.

Solid fantasy, kinda reminded me of Mistborn

I received this book for free but the review is left of my own Accord.

The two main characters are well written and while they do grow as people from when the book began, I'm not sure how much is actual personality or outlook growth opposed to just growth in their understanding of their abilities. Either way, both are interesting in their own ways and they seem to complement each other well.
The magic system in this book, along with several other bits here or there, remind me of the Mistborn and Stormlight series, which is a good thing. I think the magic was explained well without seeming too exposition-y.
The story focuses on two different subplots and I honestly found the legal drama centered one more interesting than the other, but that probably just cause I enjoyed that character more. I liked how both stories played out and was glad to see the plots basically weaving around each other as they went.
I wasn't expecting an ending like this, so I'm eager to see where the story heads in the next book.

Read this if you like Mistborn or Stormlight magic systems.
Read this if you strong female characters.
Read this if you like little guys challenging the status quo type stories.

I received this book for free and leave this review of my own accord.

This would be a solid 4-star middle-grade or YA fantasy book if not for the author grinding the plot of the book to a halt in order to give a full account of the school history project of two kids who arent even the main characters and during whose presentation nothing of consequence occurs. I was expecting something relevant to come up later regarding the information presented, but if there was a callback to that foreshadowing then it was only in an offhand comment which didnt seem to help anything.

Characters also nod a lot. That's fine. Many authors tend to use small things like that a bunch, but the narrator stretches that short 'o' sound out longer than it should be (and thats with me listening at 1.3x speed), so that was a bit distracting. The narrator also has weird spacing throughout most of the book.

Overall, I enjoyed this and would be willing to read the next entry. Im especially interested to see what happens with Duncan's grandma.

Read this book if you like irl history being woven into your fantasy books.
Read this book if you like Middle-grade/ YA fantasy.

A fun YA Adventure

I received this book for free, but this review is left of my own accord.

This is a fun YA adventure with magic, old English and Welsh lore that will be familiar to most, and some that I assume is made up just for this story. I wont go into details about the characters so as not to spoil anything, but the cast is big enough to get time spent with more than just the main pair but small enough that we get quite a bit of time with each one.
This story is very plot-centric. There isn't a lot of character development, which is fine. The story follows a couple of young teens and takes place over less than a full school year. Character growth over that short a time at that age doesnt have to be fast.
I would have given this a 4-star on the story except that during one of the kids school assignments there is a spot where the story basically stops so it can deliver a bunch of irl exposition before the story can continue on. Im dinging it a star for that. The information could have been worked in better if the author felt compelled enough to include it.
I dinged the performance 1-star because the narrator pronounces some words strangely. It's like she's enlongating the sound some of the vowels make. Sometimes, but not all of the time. Plus sometimes she's spacing the words strangely and it can be a tad distracting.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to book 2.

Give this book a shot if you like fantasy YA stuff like Harry Potter.
Give this book a shot if you like old English and Welsh lore.

I've really enjoyed these short thrilled/mysteries. Very well done and you don't need a huge time commitment to complete it.

There is a factual error about banking in this, but it's unimportant to the story.

Performance gets 4 stars cause Quinto does a good job but there are too many sentences where he puts emphasis in weird places. You'd think a successful actor like him would be better at it.

I know I received this book for free. I do not remember if it was in exchange for an honest review or not, but regardless, this review is left honestly and of my own volition. This review is also left after only listening to the first of three books in this collection.

I like CZT's work. The stories are interesting and I very much enjoyed the other series by her (them?) that I've read. Im dinging the story a star because the protag isnt really involved in solving the crime. Maybe that isnt the point of cozy mysteries, but them just going to a place where the bad guy happens to confess what they did takes away any agency of having helped solved the case.

The narrator comes across as a slightly more emotive Siri who was taught sentence structure and how to speak by William Shatner or Christopher Walken while putting emPHAsis on weird words in the sentences sometimes. I appreciate that she tried to do extra voices for the other characters, and that is pretty much the only reason you can convince me that this wasnt narrated by a robot.
All of that said, the narrators voice is pleasant and I'd be happy to listen to her narrate more books if she doesnt read them like this one.

I'll definitely be continuing the series, but it'll be on Kindle, not Audible.

I received this book for free though the review is left of my own accord.

The Warden and co continue to be entertaining. This isn't what I would call epic fantasy, but there is enough world-building and character growth from book to book to appease me. The addition of Morwen as as part of the team gives food balance with Berenger. she is his opposite on nearly everything.

The story is fun and went into directions I did not expect. I also enjoy that the creatures and enemies in this series continue to be mostly familiar things that have been around in our own folklore for hundreds of years.

If you enjoy fantasy books, give this series a shot. It's good fun.
