Historia
The islands of Britain and Ireland hold a rich heritage of plant folklore and wisdom, from the magical yew tree to the bad-tempered dandelion. Here are traditional tales about the trees and plants that shape our landscapes and our lives through the seasons. They explore the complex relationship between people and plants, in lowlands and uplands, fields, bogs, moors, woodlands and towns.

Touching our now despised and hated roots.
Revisado: 03-06-24
Lovely enchanted tales which escape being woke because they aren’t preachy. So sad we’ve lost our love of bards and fables.

The logical sequence.
Revisado: 01-09-24
I couldn’t believe 2+ hours passed so quickly. I never for a moment felt that this review of Lewis’s work was a chore or job. I was also surprised by how delicately yet unapologetically Lewis’s more controversial and dated ideas and opinions were presented to a potentially very sensitive and polarised audience.

This isn’t a book.
Revisado: 09-09-22
If you know anything about Dallas Willard, you’ll know he was a prolific writer. However this particular ‘audiobook’ isn’t a book at all. It’s essentially a collection of sermons and conversations between Dallas Willard, John Ortberg and the attendees of a possibly week long gathering.
Normally I’d be indignant that what should at best be a podcast is sold as a book… and not just a book but an audiobook which requires writing, editing, publishing and distribution… and then the time consuming process of converting it into an audiobook. Thus the scrooge in me feels decidedly cheated, however I have ‘reread’ this ‘book’ multiple times and I discover new gems every time. It’s content is worth far more than the money I spent on it.

The sensitivity of Dallas
Revisado: 08-31-22
Having listened to many of Dallas Willard’s online content, I was so hoping for his voice or someone similar… sort of fatherly yet childlike. I couldn’t ever even come close to the clarity and quality of Mr Gardner, but I wish it was someone more like Dallas in spirit and temperament.

Historia
From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind.

The difference between reading and teaching
Revisado: 10-09-21
I feel almost disloyal saying this, but having listened to numerous lectures (in the YouTube Maps series delivered by JBP to his varsity students) where I’m totally gripped, staying clocked into this Audiobook is neigh impossible. It’s just too dense and I find it difficult to work out where one thought ends and the next begins. So perhaps I need to try to listen to the YouTube lectures in order and then overlay them with on this audio.

Thoroughly enriched, enlightened and entertained.
Revisado: 06-14-21
It’s difficult to sum up this vast assortment of works by Chesterton, because it’s not all entertainment and not all philosophy and not all spiritual. However if I’m pressed to choose a favourite, it would be the Flying Inn. Steward Crank does a brilliant job to bring this tale to life. It is a buffet and needs to be approached as such.
If I have one complaint it is that the whole thing is simply arranged as a mass of chapters instead of titles, so one cannot select what one is in the mood for.

Historia
The book acts as a guide which explains how Christianity is the best choice for all human beings, not because it's outside of our world and an independent truth, but because it is the answer to our base needs and desires. Only when Christianity is seen as a way of life instead of a belief can the true power of the faith be realized.

Philosophical thesis
Revisado: 10-08-20
This review gives “Story:” zero because there is no story. It’s a deep logical and philosophical thesis. It is well read and feels it authentically captures the tone of Chesterton.

Historia
The beloved King Ik is dead, and there was barely time to check his pulse before the royal throne was supporting the suspiciously shapely backside of an impostor pretending to be Ik's beautiful, long-lost daughter. With the land's heroic hunks busy drooling all over themselves, there's only one man left who can save the kingdom of Jenair. His name is Dungar Loloth, a rural blacksmith turned innkeeper, a surly hermit, and an all-around nobody oozing toward middle age, compensating for a lack of height, looks, charm, and tact with guts and an attitude.

Several hours of easy distraction.
Revisado: 10-07-20
Witches be Crazy was the ideal companion this past few days while I was building a greenhouse and nursery. I didn’t have to think too much and the story and performance kept me interested. I had compassion for the narrator as he had to wear many guises... Rose was a bit confused and so was sometimes Jiminy sister and other time a Celtic lass. No of that bothered me because I was never in doubt who was talking when. No Beard sounded so much like Jack Sparrow’s arch enemy that I couldn’t help having Capt Barbossa continually in mind.

I’m not a literary geek or anything like that. I read to learn or sometimes just to be entertained. Both the Scalzi’s books have thoroughly entertained me. The performances were as good as I needed and the stories were riveting. Hope more of the same comes along.
