Historia
A signal is detected at the outer edge of the solar system. Computational biologist Dr. Theo Cray and magician-turned-FBI-agent Jessica Blackwood are looking—and listening—a little closer. The man at the center of this cosmic mystery is billionaire Thomas T. Theismann. He’s spent a lifetime—and a fortune—trying to find out if we’re alone in the universe. Highly skeptical, Theo joins the effort to find the source of the signal, and he quickly enlists Jessica to look into the suspicious death of another academic at the lab.

A (slight) Letdown
Revisado: 10-07-23
Of all the Blackwood/Cray books, this is my least favorite. This book moved a bit slower and rambled a lot more. It is still a good book, just not as intriguing as the rest of the series. The voice of Theo Cray is spot-on and, even after reading the series, made listening enjoyable. The female narrator...not so good. Strange, overlong pauses, and stilted dialogue, as though she's silently counting how long to pause at commas or the ends of sentences. It comes across as vaguely automated phone-tree voice. It ruined Mastermind and almost ruined this listening experience as well. If this is the voice of Jessica in future books, I'll stick with reading, not listening.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Patience required
Revisado: 02-03-18
The prologue and half of chapter one are a suitable background. Then, the next four chapters explore the daily problems of the protagonist. Repeatedly. I got the point after a few paragraphs: she's hypervigilant and afraid with good reason. Finally, in chapter four, an important something happens. I'm not even mildly interested in finding out what happens after that; it's scary to think the rest of the book might be as drawn out as the first few chapters. There are too many well-paced books in the universe, so I'm not wasting anymore time with this one.

Well, there were scary parts
Revisado: 08-02-17
A bit tricky, rating this book. It is verrrryyyy slow to develop, hits a good stride and is plenty creepy/scary, but the last few chapters? Meh. very good narrator for all characters.

Please, just stop!
Revisado: 07-01-17
The narrator's voice is great. The story is compelling (at least up to chapter 4, where I stopped.) But all the effing "equals"! Those are forcing me to stop listening. Hopefully, it is less annoying when reading. If it's not, I just wasted a bunch of money. THAT equals pissed off reader, who will not be recommending this book.

The best kind of surprise
Revisado: 06-30-17
This is the best choice I've made from all the Kindle First books and it makes up for the other, disappointing choices and then some.
An amazingly detailed and well-plotted story. The author's attention to detail and thorough research make for a novel that kept me up very late (the audible version of just one more chapter.) From the cold war to contemporary Russia, the book is an adventure of spy craft intrigue, the complexities of war, and political hubris. Added in are a little black dog and a guest apperance by some piranha, giving it enough wit to balance out some of the graphic scenes inherent to a great suspense novel.
Alan Smyth give a stunning performance! He manages to portray each character's personality not only through accent but tempo of speech and a great deal of narrative talent. Some who reviewed the book on Amazon complained that it was slow and plodding. I wish those reviewers would listen to the book instead; Mister Smythe's narration would quickly end those complaints.
Definitely looking forward to the second book in the series. Joe Tiplady is a man worthy of a series.
